BRIEF INFORMATION ABOUT THE NAME

OF THE POLAR BEAR

Polar bears are classified as marine mammals because they spend most of their lives on the sea
ice of the Arctic Ocean.

They have a thick layer of body fat and a waterproof coating that insulates them from air and
cold water. They are talented swimmers: they can maintain a pace of six miles per hour (9.6
kph) paddling with their front legs while holding their hind legs flat like a rudder.

CHARACTERISTICS:
The polar bear is a fascinating animal that has the following characteristics:
-It is quadruped, that is, it walks on its four legs, ending in sharp and short claws, designed for
maritime hunting.
-His fur is white and covers it completely, although there is a rarely visible black skin
underneath. Beneath the skin and dermis they have a dense layer of fat that insulates the body
from the environment, and that only thins out on the head and muzzle.

HABITAT:
Polar bear habitat is restricted to the arctic region, around the North Pole. Their populations are
distributed as follows:
-West of Alaska and Wrangel Island.
-North Alaska.
-In the Canadian tundra (60% of polar bears live here).
-North of Russia.

REPRODUCTION:
Mating season is the only time of year when polar bears are friendly to one another, although
fights between males over access to the female are common. Like all higher animals, its
reproduction is sexual and by internal fertilization, although the fertilization of the female's
ovum occurs late, almost four months after copulation with the male.

INTERESTING FACTERESTING FACT:

-They have a stronger bite than the great white shark.
-They can communicate using only their feet
-They are able to run as fast as horses
-Polar bears have three eyelids.
