BHD. PROJECT : THE LIGHT CITY, PLOT C (MEZZO). TITLE : TESTING HARDENED CONCRETE 1.0 2.0 3.0 31 32 33 4.0 5.0 (Compressive strength of test specimens) SCOPE This method statement specifies a method for the determination of the compressive strength of test specimens of hardened concrete. The test specimen shall be a cube, cylinder or core. For cube or cylinder specimens, laboratory testing does not include sampling, compacting and curing of standard cube or cylinder specimens. Standard cube or cylinder specimens will be tested in as-received conditions. REFERENCE, BS EN 12390-3: 2019 APPARATUS. Compression Testing Machine Measuring device such as ruler Balance PRINCIPLE. Specimens are loaded to failure in a compression testing machine. The maximum load sustained by the specimen is recorded and the compressive strength of the concrete is calculated. TEST SPECIMENS ‘The test specimen shall be a cube, cylinder or core. If the dimension of the test specimen does not conform to the tolerances for designated size or diameter or if damaged specimen, shall be noted in the test report. Standard cube specimen or cylinder specimen Standard cube specimens or cylinder specimen will be tested in as-received conditions. Weigh the specimen and measure it dimensions. All bearing surfaces of testing machine should be wiped clean. Any loose grit or other extraneous material should be removed from the surface of specimen which will be in contact with platens. Position the cube specimens so that the load is applied perpendicularly to the direction of casting. The specimen should be placed carefully on the center of lower platen. Note: The cube or eylinder specimens should be made and cured by customer in accordance with the relevant standard before delivering to our laboratory for compression test b. Core specimen Core specimen extract from RC structure, will be trimmed to reduce its length (usually equivalent to the core diameter, length/diameter ratio 1 if strength result is to be compared to cube strength or length/diameter ratio 2 if the strength result is to be compared to cylinder strength) by sawing the core perpendicular to its longitudinal axis. The trimmed core should than be capped with high alumina cement mortar to provide parallel end surfaces to the core sample. Weigh the specimen and measure it dimensions. All bearing surfaces of testing machine should be wiped clean. Any loose grit or other extraneous material should be removed from the surface of specimen which will be in contact with platens. Include distance pieces to appropriate height, center the core carefully on the platen of the machine. Loading and assessment Without shock, apply the load within the range of 0.6 + 0.2 N/mm?.s to the specimen and increase continuously until no greater load can be sustained. Record the maximum load indicated in KN. Assess type of failure of specimen. EXPRESSION OF RESULTS The compressive strength, f- is given by the formula: ‘Maximum load at failure, KN te Cross-sectional area, mm? ‘The compressive strength shall be expressed to the nearest 0.1 N/mm?, Page 2 of 3 Ref: TPK/tpk/W/23/03-02/P04 Date : 8° March 2023 TEST REPORT The report contain the following information, customer and project reference to BS EN 12390-3: 2019. identification of the test specimen condition of specimen on receipt (if relevant) dimensions of the specimen date of test maximum load at failure, in KN compressive strength of specimen, to the nearest 0.1 N/mm? assessment of type of failure date of test age of specimen at time of test (if known) mass of the specimen . density test environmental condition etc. a. b. c a. e £ B. h Page 3 of 3
