The Diary of Anne Frank

Quotation

“While the men are in the building below, we must have complete quiet. Every sound can be
heard down there, not only in the workrooms, but in the offices, too. The men come at about
eight-thirty, and leave at about five-thirty. So, to be perfectly safe, from eight in the morning
until six in the evening we must move only when it is necessary, and then in stockinged feet.
We must not speak above a whisper. We must not run any water. We cannot use the sink,
or even, forgive me, the w.c.” - Otto Frank

Mr. Frank said this because if they make any noise, and people hear them, they will
be thrown into a death camp

Symbol

I chose this symbol because it is the patch all Jews had to wear when Hitler came to
power. In the story, Peter throws his into the fire, but when Anne tries to, she finds that she
can’t throw it in. When Peter asks why, she says that it is the Star of David. It is a part of
their faith, even though it is used to brand them as Jews.

Personal Response

My personal response for the Diary of Anne Frank is that she had to face so much,
and had to go threw so much, living with people who didn’t like her, her mom not
understanding her, and constantly worrying that the Nazis are going to find them, and not
having enough food for everyone, and Mrs. Van Daan trying to get her father to like her. SHe
had to deal with so much living with these people, and she was 13-15 in this place.

Theme
I think the theme of The Diary of Anne Frank is that if it is within your power, you must help
people. Even if they are rude and mean and terrible, you still must save them. By keeping
the Van Daan’s living in the attic with them, the Franks had to deal with all of the stuff the
Van Daan’s would do. Like Mr. Van Daan stealing the food at night or Mrs. Van Daan just being
plain rude and mean to Anne and her mother. They dealt with these things that most people
will never deal with again.
