Problem 1.20:
The following data represent the length of life, in seconds, of 50 fruit flies subject to a
new spray in a controlled laboratory experiment:
17 20 10 9 23 13 12 19 18 24 12 14 6 9 13 6 7 10 13 7 16 18 8 13 3 32
9 7 10 11 13 7 18 7 10 4 27 19 16 8 7 10 5 14 15 10 9 6 7 15
1) Construct a double-stem-and-leaf plot for the life span of the fruit flies using the
stems 0*, 0·, 1*, 1·, 2*, 2·, and 3* such that stems coded by the symbols * and
· are associated, respectively, with leaves 0 through 4 and 5 through 9.
2) Set up a relative frequency distribution.
3) Find the median.
4) Set up a frequency distribution.
5) Set up a Relative Frequency Distribution.
6) Set up a Cumulative Frequency Distribution.
7) Set up a Cumulative Relative Frequency Distribution.
8) Construct a Relative Frequency Histogram.
9) Construct a Relative Frequency Bars.
10) Construct a Relative Frequency Pie-charts.
11) Construct a Relative Frequency Polygon-graph.
12) Construct a Histogram, Bars, Pie Charts and Polygon graphs.

Solution:
1. A double-stem-and-leaf plot for the life span of the fruit flies.

Stem Leaf Frequency

0* 34 2
0. 56667777777889999 17
