can be referred to as dog kennels, dog
enclosures and dog containment.
I have over 25 years of dog ownership
experience, I previously owned and
operated a successful dog care and dog
walking business, I’ve always been a dog
whisperer, and I have also been a dog
and wolf lover my entire life.
I have two Northern breed dogs

CHAPTER ONE
What’s a Dog Crate
and What’s the Hype
About?
Dog crates are enclosed structures
made of metal, wire, plastic, wood,
fabric or a combination of all or any of
these.
Dog crates are typically used for
security and transportation, and
ultimately provide a safe and secure
space for dogs based off the concept
of a “wolf’s den.”
Crates typically have a door that can be
locked or latched to prevent the dog
from escaping, come in various sizes
and can be designed and customized
based on dogs’ breed, their size, needs,
length of time spent in the crate,
number of dogs in a household,
characteristics and temperament,
location, environment and more.
Pre-made and store bought crates are
usually collapsible for easy storage and
portability, have additional features like
removable trays for easy cleaning or
dividers for adjusting the size as the
dog grows.

Custom designed and built dog crates
and enclosures, can be indoors and/or
outdoors and are meant to be
“permanent” however they could be
taken down and moved elsewhere if
needed.
It’s important to note that crates
should not be used as a form of
punishment or confinement for
extended periods. Dogs should have
plenty of exercise, socialization, and
human interaction outside of the crate.
Crate training should always be done
with positive reinforcement,
environment and surroundings.
Gradual introduction to the dog crate
is also very important to ensure the
dog sees the crate as a positive and
comfortable place instead of a scary
and negative place to be in.
CHAPTER TWO

Choosing the
Correct Size
Dog Crates bought online or in a store, come in various sizes to
accommodate different breeds and dog sizes.

A good rule of thumb when selecting a crate is selecting a size that is

at least 4x the size of your dog when they are fully stretched out. This
allows your dog to not feel claustrophobic and have plenty of room to
stand up, turn around, stretch, lie down and sleep.

Dog Breeds & Crate Sizes

Extra Small (XS): This size is best for TOO
small dog breeds such as Chihuahuas SMALL

and Yorkshire Terriers.

The dimensions of an extra small dog

crate usually range from 18-22 inches in
length, 12-14 inches in width, and 14-16
inches in height.

Small (S): This size is meant for small

dog breeds like Shih Tzus, Miniature
Poodles or Pugs.

The dimensions of small dog crates

vary but typically range from 24-30
inches in length, 18-22 inches in width,
and 20-24 inches in height.

Medium (M): This size works well for medium dog breeds like Beagles,
Bulldogs, or Cocker Spaniels. The dimensions on medium sized crates usually
range from 32-38 inches in length, 22-28 inches in width, and 24-28 inches in
height.

Large (L): The

dimensions of this sized
crate usually range from
42-48 inches in length,
28-30 inches in width
and 30-34 inches in
height.

This size is suitable for

larger dog breeds such
as Golden Retrievers,
Labradors or Boxers.

Extra Large (XL): This size works best for

dog breeds such as Great Danes, Saint
Bernard's, Mastiffs, Huskies, and
Malamutes as the dimensions are usually
around 48-54 inches in length, 30-36
inches in width, and 32-36 inches in
height.

HELPFUL TIP

If you’re starting off with a puppy, a smaller crate will do, however if your dog is
a breed that will get larger as it grows you will need to upgrade the crate to
larger size later on.

For example, a husky puppy will be small at first and a small dog crate would be
appropriate, however at it’s fully grown size, it will require a much larger crate!

Therefore, buying the appropriate size for your dog at it’s fully grown size will
you save you time and money in the long run.

CHAPTER THREE

SAVE
Time & Money
Dog crate manufacturers and retail stores will sell you a dog crate, that temporarily
helps you and works for the short term, however these crates are not permanent
solutions and can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars for a product that will only
sort of meet your needs and requirements.

What will you do once your dog grows out of it, wrecks it by bending or chewing
through the wire (yes, these things can and do happen!), or you get more dogs?

You won’t or shouldn’t put more than one dog into the same crate unless they are
tiny puppies, so this means that you will have to get a new or additional crate,
costing you more time and money.

I have found the best way to save time, money, and get the right set up for your dog
right from the start, so that you don’t have to stress, worry, spend time searching for
additional dog crates, spend more money with many other benefits to make your
life easier, all while, allowing your dog to grow, and be a regular happy dog!

This is exactly what I did when I first brought my dog home from the breeder. This
solution has worked so well in my own life and I am so excited to share it with you.

CHAPTER THREE

My Story

Before I could bring my first dog home from the breeder, I was required to have an
escape proof enclosure (crate) for her that met specific requirements based on her
dog breed, and that of the dog breeder.

Without this, I would not be able to pick her up and have her. Having only one small
crate to transport her in and having her loose in the house when I could not be
around her was not enough or appropriate for a Northern breed, escape artist type
dog like mine which led me to searching online for the perfect set up for her that I
could just select, order and have shipped straight to my door.

I spent hours and hours searching online for a crate/enclosure that would work for
her. I found a lot of different options and products that were a standard one size fits
all type crate made out of different materials (wire, cloth/fabric, wood), however
there was nothing that would be strong or large enough, and it would end up costing
hundreds to thousands of dollars for something that only kind of worked in the short
term which was not the experience I thought I would have.

I was uncertain about what to do and also frustrated. Shortly after, an idea was
presented. Why not create my own custom crate (enclosure)?

After giving it some thought, I realized that this would have many benefits and would
be exactly what I needed especially because the crates I found online were thin wire
and would easily be destroyed by my new dog.

Therefore, buying the correct gauge chain link that is much stronger and not able to
be bent easily, was the better option for me and I could buy as much as I wanted to
and create the correct size that I wanted for my dog instead of spending hundreds
of dollars on a small crate only for her to destroy it.

 CHAPTER FOUR

Custom Dog Crates

After purchasing welded wire kennel panels and chain link materials, this custom
enclosure was constructed as my dog’s escape proof “crate.”

The panels were built into the ground about a foot or more, chain link was added to
the entire ground to further prevent digging, metal fence posts and chain link was put
up as the cover or roof for her crate to prevent her from climbing and jumping out.

The final result was a 40 foot dog run, with a 10x10 pen. Three welded wire gates were
also installed in three different places for functionality and accessibility.

Later on, a roof with gutter system was added to the 10x10 pen to protect her from
the elements that we would see at various times throughout the year (rain, sun, snow,
wind etc.) and a gutter system was installed for when it rained so that it wouldn’t run
into her pen and instead went into a rain barrel which allowed me to water
surrounding plants and flowers that I had planted nearby which made the entire set
up aesthetically pleasing and to my standards.

Benefits
of Custom Dog
Crates
Having the best set up at the onset with the right materials, size and features
ensures that the “crate” will fit your dog’s needs and your own.

Won’t have to purchase several kennels or crates because your dog had the
right set up from the start.

Creating a custom dog crate, enclosure, kennel allows you complete control
over materials, budget, design, layout, location and more.

Custom crate, enclosures, kennels are typically permanent, however they can
be created to be more short-term, meaning you only have to do it once.

Won’t have to search for new or additional dog crates;

Makes potty training easier. Your dog can be left alone in a safe and secure
area. No extra time cleaning spent cleaning up accidents around the house.

Prevents damage to furniture, walls (drywall), and other household items,

which prevents dogs from ingesting toxic and harmful substances and items.
No emergency veterinary visits, unwanted pet medical bills, or repairs and
replacements.

Provides you with peace of mind; contributes to the overall health and safety
of your dog.

Provides plenty of space for your dog(s) to run around, play, have doggie
play dates, have more dogs, and allows the dog to get energy out while you
can do other things. This is super helpful, for shift workers, or on days you
can’t take them for walks, etc.
