 IR-PCB INTERCONNECT TO INGERSOLL RAND NIRVANA INTELLISYS “SGN / SGNE” CONTROLLED

COMPRESSORS
FOR SGN/SGNE INTELLISYS CONTROLLED MACHINES:
• When using the X8I Automation System, the ir-485 and irV-485 Gateway is the “recommended and preferred” method when
interfacing and connecting to the FG (redeye), SG, SGN and SGNe, SE IntelliSys controlled compressors and Nirvana 15-
30KW (20-40HP) Compressors. See Appendix A for interconnect drawings for these applications
• Ingersoll Rand does NOT recommend using a X4i with any 50Hp to 300Hp Nirvana. The Nirvana will not be properly
monitored or trimmed if connected to an X4i with the SI1. When using the X4I Automation System, the ir-PCB is the only
method when interfacing and connecting to the FG (redeye), SG, SGN and SGNe, SE IntelliSys controlled compressors and
Nirvana 15-30KW (20-40HP) Compressors. See Appendix B for interconnect drawings for these applications
• The SI1 interface (CCN: 42425710) must be used to allow the SGN/SGNe Controller to be sequenced/controlled by the X
-Series .
• Note: Using the SI1 interface with a IR-PCB and X4i, the X4i will only treat the Nirvana 50 to 300Hp range compressor as a
fixed speed. It cannot trim it correctly.
• The ‘SEQUENCER’ setting of the Intellisys controller must be set to ‘ON’.
• Remote Start / Stop must be set to “OFF”.
• Auto Restart must be turned ‘ON’ to allow the machines to stop in Auto restart when unloaded by the X -Series Automation.
• The Intellisys must be run in the Online/Offline regulation mode. Do not use Modulation or ACS.
• Check the Intellisys software revision level. Always update to the latest revision prior to operation.
DRAWING NOTES FOR NIRVANA MACHINES:
• Note: The Nirvana Target Pressure “MUST” be set equal to the Midpoint of the X -Series Automation pressure control band.

• Refer to the X -Series Automation Overview Drawing for the X -Series Automation Compressor 2 through 4 X01 to IR-PCB
terminal connections.

APPENDIX C -IR-PCB TO INGERSOLL RAND PRESSURE SWITCH CONTROLLED COMPRESSOR

INTERCONNECT DRAWINGS
 IR-PCB INTERCONNECT TO INGERSOLL RAND PRESSURE SWITCH CONTROLLED COMPRESSORS
FOR ALL COMPRESSORS:
• Compressors to be connected must have automatic Start / Stop capability .

DRAWING NOTES FOR PRESSURE SWITCH CONTROLLER MACHINES:

• Ensure each compressor is equipped with independent Excessive Pressure Shutdown Switch. An increase in pressure
differential across air treatment equipment can result in excess compressor discharge pressure. See Appendix A, Page 70
and 71 for application drawings. In most applications, the model and type of pressure switch supplied with the compressor
can be used as the Excessive Pressure Shutdown Switch. If this is specific model/type of pressure switch is not readily
available, any pressure switch can be utilized as long as it equals or exceeds the specifications of the pressure switch found
on the compressor.
• Set the Excessive Pressure Shutdown Switch to “OPEN” 5 PSI less than the maximum discharge pressure recommended by
the compressor manufacturer.

 IR-PCB INTERCONNECT TO INGERSOLL RAND SMALL RECIPROCATING AIR COMPRESSORS

FOR ALL COMPRESSORS:
• Compressors to be connected must have automatic Start / Stop capability .

DRAWING NOTES FOR PRESSURE SWITCH CONTROLLER MACHINES:

• Ensure each compressor is equipped with independent Excessive Pressure Shutdown Switch. An increase in pressure
differential across air treatment equipment can result in excess compressor discharge pressure. See Apendix A Page 70 and
71 for application drawings. In most applications, the model and type of pressure switch supplied with the compressor can
be used as the Excessive Pressure Shutdown Switch. If this is specific model/type of pressure switch is not readily available,
any pressure switch can be utilized as long as it equals or exceeds the specifications of the pressure switch found on the
compressor.
• Set the Excessive Pressure Shutdown Switch to “OPEN” 5 PSI less than the maximum discharge pressure recommended by
the compressor manufacturer.

 IR-PCB Interconnect To Ingersoll Rand Second Generation IntelliSys “SG” Controlled

Compressors
FOR SG INTELLISYS CONTROLLED MACHINES:
• When using the X8I or X12I Automation System, the ir-485 and irV-485 Gateway is the “recommended and preferred”
method when interfacing and connecting to the FG (redeye), SG, SGN and SGNe, SE IntelliSys controlled compressors and
Nirvana 15-30KW (20-40HP) Compressors. See Appendix A for interconnect drawings for these applications
• When using the X4I Automation System, the ir-PCB is the “recommended and preferred” method when interfacing and
connecting to the FG (redeye), SG, SGN and SGNe, SE IntelliSys controlled compressors and Nirvana 15-30KW (20-40HP)
Compressors. See Appendix B for interconnect drawings for these applications.
Note: the X4i will NOT be able to trim the VFD capacity up and down smoothly, and X8i or X12i is preferred for VFD drives.
• FOR SIERRA SG INTELLISYS CONTROLLERS, the SI1 interface (CCN: 42425710) can be used as an alternative to allow the
SG Controller to be sequenced/controlled by the X -Series Automation
DRAWING NOTES FOR SG INTELLISYS CONTROLLED MACHINES:
• Note: For Star Delta starter wiring the X -Series Automation Run signal should be connected directly to the 1M coil.

• Note: For Full Voltage wiring, the 1S (1Sb) interlock will not be used. The X -Series Automation Run signal can be connected
directly to the Intellisys P1-2 terminal.

 IR-PCB INTERCONNECT TO INGERSOLL RAND PRESSURE SWITCH CONTROLLED COMPRESSORS

FOR ALL COMPRESSORS:
• Compressors to be connected must have automatic Start / Stop capability .

• Use the VSD mA Box kit for all pressure switch compressors with external Danfoss drives. Also addition of a Speed Kit is
necessary for the X8i or X12i to trim the VFD capacity properly.

 Interconnection of a VSD B Box kit to Xe-M rotary fixed speeds with Danfoss external drive
This article applies to the following Xe-90M and Xe-145M Fixed Speed compressors retrofitted with a Bolt-On VSD Drive and
VSD-B Box:
• R Series Xe-90M Contact Cooled

• R Series Xe-145M Contact Cooled

• Large SSR Xe-90M Contact Cooled
• Large SSR Xe-145M Contacted Cooled
• Sierra Xe-90M Oil Free
• Sierra Xe-145M Oil Free
• VSD-B Box CCN: 23410780
Modifications in this software version were limited to the following:
1. Increase Modbus response delay by ~15ms (provide proper response to the gateway)
2. Added specific Modbus registers required for gateway interface (allows master to see the controller correctly)
3. Addition of a “Gateway” selection setting within Factory Settings (toggle gateway options for proper integration)
4. Modified program to separate (allow) Remote Start/Stop functionality from sequencer control (Comm Control)
NOTE: For R Series Fixed Speed, software must be revision 2.6.0 or newer.
For SSR, software must be revision 2.4.0 or newer.
For Sierra, software must be revision 2.2.0 or newer.
Refer to Tech Direct answer 2614 to download latest software revisions.
Installation:
Physical mounting and wiring of the VSD-B Box is very similar to that of installing a VSD-B Box on an SG controlled compressor
with the exception of the interconnect wiring to and from the Xe-M controller. This article is intended to supplement the VSD-B
Box Operators Manual CCN 80445505. Follow the manual for general installation instructions and commissioning procedures.
It is worth noting that VSD Boxes in general should receive power from the same power feed as the compressor control panel.
Although not mandated, it is highly recommended to interlock the compressor controller with the VSD Box using the Group
Alarm Relay. Contact Technical Support for more information on this topic.

RELEASED 05/Jun/2018 16:59:56 GMT

Transducer, communication, and auxiliary control wiring installation is not much different between the Xe-M controller and it’s
predecessor, the SG controller. In fact, integration of the Xe-M and VSD-B Box requires use of the IR-485 gateway included with
the kit. But, the IR-485 gateway’s IRBus/Modbus port (X02/X03 Figure 1) will connect to the Xe-M controllers Modbus port (P9-
COM2).

NOTE: You must use code 1215 to modify the VSD box from type mA to type B.
NOTE 2: You must add a Speed Kit, either CCN 39266150 or CCN 39266143, for the X8i or X12i to properly trim the VFD capacity.

EN-124 80443864 Rev. E

RELEASED 05/Jun/2018 16:59:56 GMT

EN

The gateway dip switch settings are similar to those when connecting an SG controller. For R Series controller type dip switch
settings, they should be set to the SSR SG type (refer to IR-485 Operators Manual CCN 80444094). For Sierra, use Sierra SG dip
switch settings.
With the VSD-B Box and gateway installed, connected and configured properly, the Xe-M controller must be configured to
make use of the new installation. Beside the standard configuration settings required upon commissioning (refer to VSD-B Box
and IR-485 Gateway Manuals), the new Xe-M software has a “Gateway” selection field that must be Enabled to allow proper
interface and control of the compressor. Figure 3 details the Gateway selection field within the Factory Settings tab.

Once installation and configuration is complete, validation should be performed by starting or allowing the compressor to
start via the X Series Automation System. A correctly installed and configured VSD-B Box and compressor interconnection will
function integrally. As an example, a properly operating VSD-B Box will start automatically with the compressor and begin
controlling the VSD by manipulating the pressure output to the drive.
