 Mini-Mental State Examination or Folstein test is a set of 11 questions that check for cognitive
impairment.
Area of assessment
 Test for Cognition and Activities of the daily living
Assessment type
 Observer
Administration mode
 Paper and Pencil
Equipment required
 MMSE score sheet (flash MMSE sheet)
 Writing instrument

What condition is MMSE for?

 Brain injury recovery
 Cardiac dysfunction
 Parkinson’s disease & patient with neurologic deficit
 Patient recovering from Stroke

Guidelines for MMSE (SRA lab)

 The MMSE consists of 11 simple questions or tasks grouped into 7 cognitive domains:
1) Orientation to time
2) Orientation to place
3) Registration of three words
4) Attention and calculation
5) Recall of three words
6) Language
7) Visual construction
 A possible score of 30 is used to provide a picture of an individual's present cognitive
performance based on direct observation of completion of test items/tasks.
 A score of < 24 is the generally an accepted cutoff indicating the presence of cognitive
impairment (Dick et al., 1984).
 Levels of impairment have been classified as (Tombaugh & McIntyre, 1992):
None: score = 24-30
Mild: score = 18-24
Severe: score = 0-17

Limitation of MMSE
 Interpretation of the scores
 A high MMSE doesn’t necessarily mean that you don’t have cognitive impairment especially, if
it’s tested in the early onset.
 The MOCA is also a cognitive test which will be discussed/which was discussed earlier.
According to SRA lab, MMSE is not as sensitive as MoCA in detecting mild cognitive
impairment
