Wind Trends Bulletin: 2011 Q2

27 September 2011

Winds Well Below Normal Active Area of Research at AWS Truepower During the second quarter of 2011, most of India experienced belownormal wind speeds compared to the longterm average for the same quarter (see inset map). The greatest deviations occurred in Ramgarh, Garhjat, and Mahadeo Hills (up to 18% belownormal)andthroughoutGujaratandKarnataka(upto15% belownormal).Regionsthatexperiencednormalorabovenormal wind speeds were limited to the northwestern Thar Desert, ShivalikRange, andsmallportionsoftheTelanganaPlateau. Anomaloushighpressurewaspresentthroughoutthemonthsof April and May. This caused below normal wind speeds over nearly all of India. Local areas within the Kachchh Peninsula, Aravali Range, Nilgiri, Analmalai, Mahadeo and Ramgarh Hills experienced winds that were 1015% below normal. Coastal Maharashtra and small portions of the Shivalik Range were the only areas that experienced significantly abovenormal wind WindSpeedAnomalyMap:Q22011 speeds during this period. The anomalous high pressure pattern weakened in June and wind speeds generally increased as the southwest monsoon progressed northward. This shift caused Southwest Kerala, the TharDesert, and portions of the Telangana Plateau, and Tamil Nadu to experience windier thanaverage conditionsduringthismonth.Conversely, thelargestnegativedeviationsinwindspeedsduringJunewereobservedthroughoutthe MalabarCoast,Malwaplateau, andtheRamgarhandGarhjatHills.
