MS & PLUS CALL DESCRIPTIONS
Turn Thru (Mainstream)
Starting formation: Facing Dancers
Dance action: In one smooth motion, dancers Step to A Wave (using forearm hold), Right Arm Turn ½,
and Step Thru.
Dance action: The dancers work in "tandem", that is, the trailing dancers follow the lead dancers.
The lead dancers separate and move away from each other in a ¾ (270-degrees) circle.
When each lead dancer approaches another lead dancer from the other side of the square, they both
reach with outside hands, blending into a couple handhold as they continue into the center of the
square to become a couple facing in.
Each trailing dancer follows the dancer in front and ends directly behind that same dancer.
Mantra/Reminder: Leaders Separate and loop out and around to the center, Trailers follow.
Styling: Arms are held in natural dance position, skirt work optional. As dancers meet each other, they
use couples’ handholds.
As a pleasing variation, some dancers use a sweeping gesture during the call, letting go of the starting
handhold and offering the same hand for the final handhold, without dropping the arm in between.
Comments: It is important to move slightly forward before turning away (Separating). Trailing dancers
should follow footsteps of the lead dancers and not cut the corners.

MS & PLUS CALL DESCRIPTIONS
Cloverleaf (Two Couples Only Active) (Mainstream)
Starting formation: Anywhere two couples are facing out of the set.
Dance action: The designated dancers will be facing out of the set. If they are near the center of the set,
they first step forward. Next, they separate and move away from each other in a ¾ (270 degrees) circle.
When they meet another dancer from the other side of the square, they become a couple facing in. If no
one else is in front of them, they can finish in the center, just as the leads normally would for Everyone
Cloverleaf.
When the inactive dancers are a couple facing in, they will counter dance into the center.
Mantra/Reminder: Leaders Separate and loop out and around to the center, Trailers Counter Dance
Styling: Arms are held in natural dance position, skirt work optional. As dancers meet each other, they
use a couple handhold.
Comments: The next call is often directed to the inactive dancers and can commence while the active
dancers are still dancing their Cloverleaf.
Mantra/Reminder: Rights and Lefts with Courtesy Turn on Outside, (count the hands)
Styling: Same as Right and Left Thru. Dancers doing the Left Pull By in the center move slowly so their
action takes the same time as the Courtesy Turn on the outside.
Each part of this call ends in an Eight Chain Thru or Trade By formation. Dancers should not drift into a
circular formation as in Wrong Way Grand.

MS & PLUS CALL DESCRIPTIONS
Fan The Top
Starting formation: Ocean Wave or Two-Faced Line
Dance action: The centers of the line or wave turn ¾ (270 degrees) while the outside dancers move for-
ward in a ¼ circle.
Styling: Center dancers use hand positions and styling similar to that of swing thru. End dancers' arms
are in natural dance position and hands are ready to assume appropriate position for the next call.
Comments: The ending formation is at right angles to the starting formation. Centers remain centers
and ends remain ends.
Dance action: Trailing or designated dancers move forward ("walk") to take the position of the dancers
in front of them, while the Leading or designated dancers slide sideways ("dodge"), without changing
facing direction, into the vacated spot.
Styling: Arms in natural dance position, with dancers forming a couple or mini-wave handhold at the
end of the call.
From Facing Couples, callers must designate which dancers "walk" and which dancers "dodge".
Walk and Dodge is a four-dancer call. From Columns, dancers work in two groups of four, one on each
end, ending in a Trade By formation.

MS & PLUS CALL DESCRIPTIONS
Pass to the Center (Mainstream)
Starting formation: Eight Chain Thru
Dance action: Pass Thru. Those looking out of the square Partner Trade.
Styling: Same styling as Pass Thru and Partner Trade. (Pass Right shoulders.)
On the Pass Thru, some dancers should be coming into the center and other dancers should be heading
towards the outside.
Dance action: Each end and adjacent center Turn ½. New centers Turn ¾ while the ends move forward
in a ¼ circle around the formation to become ends of the final Ocean Wave (Fan the Top.)
Styling: Center dancers use hand positions and styling similar to that of swing thru. End dancers' arms
are in natural dance position and hands are ready to assume appropriate position for the next call.
Comments: This call can be done from Facing Couples by simply stepping to a wave.
The ½ turn by the Ends and adjacent Centers is the “Spin” component of Spin the Top and is a compo-
nent of other “Spin” calls as well.
From a Left-Hand Ocean Wave, the phrase "Left Spin the Top" is acceptable though not necessary. "Left"
is simply a helping word.

MS & PLUS CALL DESCRIPTIONS
Dixie Style to an Ocean Wave (Mainstream)
Starting formation: Facing Couples, Facing Tandems
Dance action: From Facing Couples: do ½ of a Half Sashay (i.e., dancers slide inward until they form a
Tandem, with the original right-hand dancer in front) and Centers Right Pull By; all Left Touch ¼.
From Facing Tandems: Centers Right Pull By; all Left Touch ¼.
Styling: From Facing Couples, the left-hand dancers should take a full step back and to the right. This
prepares for the Left Touch ¼ while giving the right-hand dancers room to Right Pull By.
From Facing Tandems, the trailers should step slightly to the right to prepare for the Left Touch ¼.
Comments: Can be done from an ocean wave in some instances (from a Single ¼ Tag).
From a Double Pass Thru, the caller may use extra clarifying words like “On a Double Track (or ‘Single
File’ or ‘Each Column of 4’), Dixie Style to a Wave” to indicate for each facing Tandem to do the call.
(Double Track" is used to describe two side-by-side Facing Tandems.)
Conversely, from a Double Pass Thru, the caller may use extra clarifying words like “Center 4, Dixie Style
to a Wave” to indicate for the Center facing couples only to do the call.
From a normal Squared Set, "All 4 Ladies Lead, Dixie Style to a Wave" is an extended application (and is
likely to come after Four Ladies Chain). The Right Pull By is replaced by Right-Hand Star ½, similar to Four
Ladies Chain. After the Left Touch ¼, dancers end in a Thar with men in the center.
Dance action: Dancers face their corners. Walking forward and around each other while keeping right
shoulders adjacent, dancers return to their original position, with their backs to their corner.
Styling: Arms are held in natural dance position, skirt work optional. Dancers should maintain eye con-
tact until their partners become visible.
Comments: Occasionally, this move is referred to as “All Around the Left-Hand Lady” in an antiquated
manner that required the women to mentally translate the command to “All Around the Right-Hand
Man.”
Page | 8
MS & PLUS CALL DESCRIPTIONS
Dance action: Facing dancers (typically partners) walk forward and around each other keeping left
shoulders adjacent. They return to their original position, facing away from each other.
Comments: See Saw is almost always preceded by Walk Around the Corner.
Do Paso (Basic)
Starting formation: Right and Left Grand Circle, Thar, Squared Set, in facing Circle of 8, or a “turning
your partner left” formation.
Dance action: Left Arm Turn with partner until facing corner and release. Right Arm Turn with corner un-
til facing partner and release.
If there is no further instruction, Courtesy Turn partner to end facing the center of the set. Otherwise,
follow the next instruction, which will likely start with a Left Arm Turn or a left Facing call.
Styling: Forearm turns are preferred, alternating left and right. When the Courtesy Turn portion of the
Do Paso is replaced by a different call, then the styling changes to the styling of that call.
Comments: In an Alamo Ring in which the men are facing out, the initial “Left Arm Turn with partner un-
til facing corner” will be a ¾ turn.
Do Paso is used primarily with a directional style of calling, in which many of the calls have vague or flex-
ible starting or ending formations, usually in Circles, Thars, and Squares. Dancers should blend smoothly
into the next call. Though the call defines a general pattern, the specific parts of the call are often cued
(for example, “Do Paso; It's partner left, corner right, partner left and hang on tight, make an Allemande
Thar with the men in the middle ...”).
While primarily a circle-type figure, Do Paso may also be started from 8 Chain Thru (half sashayed) and
Left-Hand Ocean Waves (boys on end).

MS & PLUS CALL DESCRIPTIONS
Spin Chain Thru (Mainstream)
Starting formation: Parallel Waves
Dance action: Each end and adjacent center Turn ½. New centers Turn ¾ to form a center Ocean Wave.
Very Centers Turn ½. In the center Ocean Wave, each end and adjacent center Turn ¾.
Styling: Use same styling as in Swing Thru. The resulting ends stand still as others finish the call.
Comments: This call can be done from Facing Couples by simply stepping to a wave.
While the new centers are finishing the call, the resulting ends may be given another call (e.g., Spin
Chain Thru, Ends Circulate Twice).
The ½ turn by the Ends and adjacent Centers is the “Spin” component of Spin Chain Thru and is a com-
ponent of other “Spin” calls as well.
Spin Chain Thru can be thought of as "All Turn ½. Those who meet Turn ¾. Those who meet Turn ½.
Those who meet Turn ¾".
Dance action: Those who can turn by the right ½ (180 degrees), then those who can turn by the left ½
(180 degrees). If "right" is not specified preceding the command to Grand Swing Thru, it is understood to
be a right-handed Grand Swing Thru. In the case of Grand Left Swing Thru those who can turn by the left
½ (180 degrees), then those who can turn by the right ½ (180 degrees).
Comments: This call can be done from Facing Lines by simply stepping to a Tidal Wave.
From a Tidal Wave, regular Swing Thru is danced in the Ocean Waves on each half and the Very Centers
of the Tidal Wave never Trade. For Grand Swing Thru, the Very Centers of the Tidal Wave do Trade when
appropriate.

MS & PLUS CALL DESCRIPTIONS
Acey Deucey
Starting formation: Parallel Waves, Two-Faced Lines, any formation with 4 centers and 4 ends
Dance action: Each end and the adjacent center Turn ½. New wave centers Turn ¾ to form a center
Ocean Wave and the ends Flip In (180-degree inward turn similar to Ends Run). Very Centers (of the Cen-
ter Wave) Turn ½. Each half of the square is in a four-hand Star (a “gear”) and turns it ¾.
Very Centers (of the Center Wave) Turn ½ while the four dancers that are not in the Center Wave, Flip
Out (180-degree outward turn similar to Centers Run). Each end and the adjacent center of the center
Ocean Wave Turn ¾.
Mantra/Reminder: ½, ¾, ½, ¾ (stars), ½, ¾
As the Centers Turn ¾ at the beginning of the call, the other dancers pause slightly and then, as they Flip
In, they bring the inside hand up to immediately form a star.
Comments: This call can be done from Facing Couples by simply stepping to a wave.
The call ends in waves with the same handedness and in the same location as the original waves.
The ½ turn by the Ends and adjacent Centers is the “Spin” component of Spin Chain the Gears and is a
component of other “Spin” calls as well.
The ¾ fraction to turn the star can be modified by the caller, in which case different dancers will be the
Very Centers (of the Center Wave) for the Turn ½.

MS & PLUS CALL DESCRIPTIONS
Triple Scoot
Starting formation: Columns
Dance action: Dancers facing each another’s back Extend to join adjacent forearms, turn ½ (180 de-
grees) and Extend to finish in a position holding the same hand of the dancer originally adjacent to
them. At the same time, leaders (out facers) do their part of a Box Circulate (flip over). When done from
Right-Hand Columns, the dancers facing in turn by the right. When done from Left-Hand Columns, the
dancers facing in turn by the left hand.
Comments: When done from Right-Hand Columns, the Arm Turns are Right-Handed, and the Ending for-
mation is Right-Handed. When done from Left-Hand Columns, the Arm Turns are Left-Handed, and the
Ending formation is Left-Handed.
Dance action: The end dancers move forward around the outside, passing right shoulders with three on-
coming end dancers, and immediately turn ¼ in (90 degrees) to stand, as a couple, beside the third per-
son passed, facing the center of the set. Simultaneously, the center four dancers Pass Thru, turn their
backs to their momentary partners, Partner Trade with their new partners, and Pass Thru.
Mantra/Reminder: Outsides: Pass three; Centers: Pass, Pivot away, Partner Trade, Pass
Styling: The end dancers, while moving on the outside, leave enough room for the center dancers to
work comfortably. Arms are held in natural dance position throughout the action, blending into the ap-
propriate hand position for the next call.

MS & PLUS CALL DESCRIPTIONS
Teacup Chain
Starting formation: Static Square or proceeding from everyone doing a Left Arm Turn with partner.
Dance action: The caller will specify two (either Head or Side) ladies to move to the center at the start of
the call, for example, "Head ladies center for a Teacup Chain". For the rest of the definition, these two
ladies will be called the "specified ladies".
The specified ladies move to the center and Star Right ¾ to meet their corners for a Left Arm Turn. At
the same time, the other two ladies move to the right around the perimeter of the square to their cor-
ners and do a Right Arm Turn.
Following the Arm Turns, the specified ladies move to the right around the perimeter of the square to
their new corners and do a Right Arm Turn, while the other ladies go to the center and Star Left 1-¼ to
meet their new corners for a Right Arm Turn.
Following the Arm Turns, the specified ladies then move to the center and Star Left 1-¼ to meet their
new corners for a Right Arm Turn, while the other two ladies move to the right around the perimeter of
the square to their corners and do a Left Arm Turn.
Finally, Following the Arm Turns, the specified ladies move to the right around the perimeter of the
square their new corners (their original partners) for either a Courtesy Turn or a Left Arm Turn leading
into the next command, while the other ladies go to the center and Star Right ¾ to meet their new cor-
ners (their original partners) for either a Courtesy Turn or a Left Arm Turn leading into the next com-
mand.
If the caller desires the men to execute the “ladies’” part, as described above, the starting formation is a
Static Square with all couples ½sashayed. The command is the "Head/Side Men Center for a Teacup
Chain".
Mantra/Reminder: Head ladies in with a Right, new Head ladies in with a Left, new Head ladies in with a
Left, new Head ladies in with a Right
Styling: Center dancers turning in star patterns use hands up styling. All turns with outside dancers are
forearm turns. When not leading into another command, a courtesy turn is used at the conclusion of the
call. Outside dancers (usually the gents) dance naturally from one forearm turn to the next, being as
graceful as possible in a movement that offers little other than pivot movements. Ladies may enhance
the styling of this basic through skirt work with outside hand.

MS & PLUS CALL DESCRIPTIONS
Peel Off
Starting formation: Tandem Couples, Box Circulate, or Z formation.
Dance action: Lead dancers walk in an approximate semicircle, away from the center of the starting for-
mation, to become the ends of a four-dancer line. Trailing dancers step forward as necessary to become
centers of the same line and U-Turn Back, turning away from the center of the starting formation. All
dancers end in a four-dancer line.
Styling: Arms should be held in natural dance position and ready to assume appropriate position for the
next call. It is important that lead dancers move slightly forward before starting the "peeling" motion.
Comments: Each dancer will have turned ½ (180 degrees) to end facing the opposite direction from
which they started. Peel Off from Tandem Couples ends in a One-Faced Line. Peel Off from Box Circulate
or a Z ends in a Two-Faced Line.
Notes: Everyone can Roll after a Peel Off. Dancers move in a smooth, continuous motion. The center of
the ending formation is the same as the center of the starting formation.
Two dancers who form a Tandem and have a center to work away from can Peel Off as if in a box circu-
late formation (for example, the ends of waves or the points of diamonds). They finish as a couple on a
line midway between the original lead and trailing positions.
Coordinate
Starting formation: Columns (only at Plus)
Dance action: Circulate 1-½. The center six (three adjacent pairs) Trade. The very center two dancers re-
lease handholds and walk diagonally out/forward and next to the dancer in front of them, while the two
dancers at the ends of the formation walk ahead in a ¼ circle and next to the next dancer.
Mantra/Reminder: Circulate 1-½, center 6 trade, centers and ends move up.
Styling: The center six dancers (three adjacent pairs) use hands up position for trading action. After the
very center two and end dancers move up, all dancers join hands with a couple handhold.

MS & PLUS CALL DESCRIPTIONS
Allemande Thar (Mainstream)
Starting formation: Blended from a Left Arm Turn
Dance action: Dancers continue a Left Arm Turn ½ more until the centers form a right-hand star and
back up. Outside dancers hold the left forearm of a center dancer and walk forward.
Styling: The dancers in the center, backing up, will form a Pack-saddle Star. These center dancers must
remember to allow those on the outside, who travel farther, to set the pace.
Comments: "Allemande Thar" is a formation in motion. It also is a collection of commands that result in
a Thar. The commands function as suffixes, making a Left Arm Turn end in a Thar. Descriptive words are
often part of these commands.
Callers often specify who ends in the center. This is particularly helpful in non-standard applications.
In most cases, dancers form the Thar with Left Arm Turn ½. That is, if the dancers take forearm holds
when shoulder-to-shoulder, the dancer who begins on the outside will end in the center. Callers may
specify a different amount of turning. For example: Circle Left, Turn Your Corner Left All the Way Around
to An Allemande Thar, Men in The Center.
"Allemande Left to an Allemande Thar" has a specific sequence of moves beginning with Allemande Left
and leading to a Thar. It does not mean to Left Arm Turn with corner and continue to a Thar. For that ac-
tion "Allemande Left, hang on to Corner, women wheel in to An Allemande Thar" could be used.
Page | 15
MS & PLUS CALL DESCRIPTIONS
Allemande Left to an Allemande Thar (Mainstream)
Starting formation: Same as Allemande Left
Dance action: Allemande Left, Right Pull By (or as many as specified), Left (or Right) Arm Turn to make a
Thar with the men in the center.
To avoid dancer confusion, the caller usually includes some instructions about "going forward". Going
forward two is most common. The caller can direct the dancers to Go Forward any number of hands.
Each hand is a Pull By, except the last hand, which is normally the start of an Arm Turn into a Thar or
Wrong Way Thar.
Dance action: Any backward motion is stopped as outside dancers release arm holds with the adjacent
centers. All dancers move forward around the center of the set to the next dancer (or as indicated).
On the command to Skip (or Pass) one or more dancers, everyone walks forward within their circle,
passing the indicated number of dancers.
Styling: Despite the change of moving direction, center dancers can make the switch flowing and com-
fortable if the arm hold is released effortlessly and that same hand is held ready for the next call. The
handhold after a Slip the Clutch depends on the next call.
Comments: "Allemande Thar" is a formation in motion. It also is a collection of commands that result in
a Thar. The commands function as suffixes, making a Left Arm Turn end in a Thar. Descriptive words are
often part of these commands.

MS & PLUS CALL DESCRIPTIONS
Shoot the Star (Mainstream)
Starting formation: Thar in motion, Wrong Way Thar in motion
Dance action: Centers dancers drop the inside handholds forming the star as each center dancer and the
adjacent outside dancer Arm Turn ½ and Step Thru.
If Full Around is directed, the Arm Turn is a full turn (360 degrees).
Styling: A forearm hold is used for the Arm Turn. Other hands are in natural dance position and available
for the next call. Women can continue to use skirt work during the Arm Turn.
Comments: After Shoot the Star, the caller sometimes indicates that dancers are to Pull By one or more
times and Arm Turn into another Thar. The caller can direct the dancers to Go Forward any number of
hands. Each hand is a Pull By, except the last hand, which is normally the start of an Arm Turn into a
Thar or Wrong Way Thar.
Shoot the Star can be a way to Cast ¾ and get an Alamo Ring, e.g., "Shoot the Star ¾ To an Alamo Ring"
or simply "Shoot the Star to an Alamo Ring". Shoot the Star can also blend into the next call, e.g., "Shoot
the Star, 4 Ladies Chain."
Dance action: Centers dancers drop the inside handholds forming the star as each center dancer and the
adjacent outside dancer Arm Turn a full turn (360 degrees) and Step Thru.

MS & PLUS CALL DESCRIPTIONS
(Anything) and Spread
Starting formation: Various
(1) Only certain dancers are directed to Spread (for example, from a static square, Heads Star Thru &
Spread). The indicated/active dancers slide apart sideways to become ends, while the inactive dancers
counter dance by stepping forward between them.
(2) The (Anything) call finishes in lines or waves (for example, Follow Your Neighbor). The centers of the
new formation are active dancers and slide apart sideways to become the new ends, while the original
ends counter dance by sliding together sideways to the nearest center position.
(3) The (Anything) call finishes in tandem couples (for example, Wheel and Deal from a line of four). The
lead dancers slide apart sideways to become ends, while the trailing/inactive dancers counter dance by
stepping forward between them.
Styling: All dancers blend into the appropriate hand position and styling designated by the formation re-
sulting at the conclusion of the call (for example, ocean wave styling after the call "Follow Your Neighbor
and Spread").
Comments:
Dance action: The term "... & Roll" may be added to any call which, by definition, causes one or more
dancers to have turning body flow to the right or left as they complete their portion of the call. It is an
instruction to those dancer(s) to turn individually, in place, ¼ (90 degrees) more in the direction of body
flow determined by the preceding command.
Styling: At the completion of the movement preceding the roll (anything), release all handholds and al-
low the established momentum to set the direction for the solo turn in place. Arms are returned to nat-
ural dance position and ready to assume appropriate position for the next call.
Comments: Note that if "... and Roll" is added to a call which, by definition, has some dancers walking in
a straight line at the completion of their portion of the call, those dancers will do nothing for the "... and
Roll"

MS & PLUS CALL DESCRIPTIONS
Follow Your Neighbor
Starting formation: Box Circulate, Single ¼ Tag.
Dance action: From a Box Circulate: Trailers Extend and Arm Turn ¾, while the Leaders move forward in
a tight ¾ (270 degree) circle toward their partner to finish as ends of an ocean wave.
From a Single ¼ Tag: All dancers do the Trailers part (Extend and Arm Turn ¾).
From a Right-Hand Box Circulate, Follow Your Neighbor ends in a Left-Hand Wave.
From a Right-Hand Single ¼ Tag, Follow Your Neighbor ends in a Right-Hand Wave.
Styling: Those who Arm Turn ¾ use a forearm grip, blending at the end of the call into the usual hand-
hold for an ocean wave.
Track 2
Starting formation: Completed Double Pass Thru
Dance action: The dancers work in "tandem", that is, the trailing dancers follow the lead dancers. Those
in the right "track" move single file to the left, counterclockwise, staying to the inside of the dancers on
the left "track", who move single file, clockwise, to the right on the outside. The movement continues as
in a Double Pass Thru, until the dancers have reached Parallel Right- Hand Ocean Waves.
Styling: As dancers are moving simultaneously in opposing directions, it is important for them to provide
moving room for one another. Those on the outside must avoid crowding those in the center. All
dancers hold arms in natural dance position, blending into a hands-up ocean wave formation at the con-
clusion of the call.

MS & PLUS CALL DESCRIPTIONS
Explode the Wave
Starting formation: Any 4-dancer Ocean Wave
Dance action: Everyone releases handholds, steps forward and turns ¼ in (90 degree) to face the adja-
cent dancer and right hand pull by that person, to end as Couples Back-to-Back.
Styling: A handshake hold is used as the dancers’ right hand pull by. For position orientation, hands are
joined in a couple handhold at the completion of the call.
Dixie Grand
Starting formation: Dixie Grand Circle, Double Pass Thru, ¼ Tag, or any formation where at least two
dancers can start.
Dance action: Those who can, start the call by pulling by with a facing dancer. Each dancer moves ahead
around the circle and gives a left hand to the next, pulling by, and a right hand to the next, pulling by.
Regardless of the starting formation, as the movement progresses, the formation converts to a circle.
Styling: Handshake holds are involved only to initiate pull-by movements, and released immediately, no
twirls. Arms should be held in natural dance position.
Dance action: Everyone releases handholds, steps forward and turns ¼ in (90-degrees) to face the adja-
cent dancer and does the (Anything) call (for example, Right and Left Thru, Star Thru, etc.).
Styling: In all "Explode and ..." figures, follow the styling suggestions for each of the "and ..." figures
used.

MS & PLUS CALL DESCRIPTIONS
Spin Chain and Exchange the Gears
Starting formation: Ocean Waves
Dance action: Each end and the adjacent center Turn ½. New wave centers Turn ¾ to form a center
Ocean Wave and the ends Flip In (180-degree inward turn similar to Ends Run). Very Centers (of the Cen-
ter Wave) Turn ½. Each half of the square is in a four-hand Star (a “gear”) and turns it ¾.
Very Centers (of the Center Wave) leads those in their star along a single file, circular path around the
outside of the other star (the “exchange”).
The following movements are blended together. When the leader has gone ¾ around, she/he Turns
Back and does a Touch ¼ with the 2 nd in line. The 3rd in line faces right ¼ and the last steps up to the end
of the newly formed ocean wave.
As the Centers Turn ¾ at the beginning of the call, the other dancers pause slightly and then, as they Flip
In, they bring the inside hand up to immediately form a star.
While turning the Star and exchanging, each group of four dancers are following a smooth S-like path.
The exchange and formation of the waves is one continuous action. As each star forms (before turning
the star), the dancer who will be leading the exchange (initially facing out) often raises the outside hand
to indicate "follow me". That hand is held up for the star turn and through the exchange and can be
smoothly joined with the inside hand of the following dancer when forming the ending wave.
Comments: This call can be done from Facing Couples by simply stepping to a wave.
The ½ turn by the Ends and adjacent Centers is the “Spin” component of Spin Chain and Exchange the
Gears and is a component of other “Spin” calls as well.
The call ends in waves with the same handedness and in the same orientation as the original waves.
The ¾ fraction to turn the star can be modified by the caller, in which case a different dancer will lead
the exchange.

MS & PLUS CALL DESCRIPTIONS
Relay the Deucey
Starting formation: Parallel Ocean Waves
Dance action: Each end and the adjacent center dancer turn ½ (180 degrees). The new centers of each
ocean wave turn ¾ (270 degrees), while the others ½ circulate, forming a six-person wave and two lone-
some dancers. The wave of six, working as 3 pairs, turns ½, while the others ½ circulate. In the wave, the
center 4 turn ½, while the other four dancers ½ circulate. The wave of 6, again working as 3 pairs, turns
½, while the others ½ circulate. Finally, the center 4 of the wave turn ¾ (becoming the centers of the fi-
nal waves), while the outside 4 ½circulate to become the ends of the final waves.
Mantra/Reminder: ½, ¾, ½, ½, ½, ¾
Styling: Basic swing thru styling is utilized for turning movements within the ocean wave formations. Cir-
culating dancers do the circulate action with arms in natural dance position, blending to hands up ocean
wave formation at the conclusion of the call.
Comments: All Circulates in this definition refer to the Original Circulate path established by the ends of
the original ocean waves.
No dancer ever stops moving during this call; the perceived pauses in the definition (that is, the action
described as "½ circulate") are there for clarity of description and for teaching purposes only.
Crossfire
Starting formation: Two-Faced Line, Parallel Lines of four, Inverted Line(s)
Dance action: As the centers begin to Trade, the ends Cross Fold. Upon completing their Trade, the cen-
ters release hands and step straight forward forming an Ocean Wave or Mini-Wave with the dancers
may be facing. If the Trade leaves the original centers facing no one, they step forward and remain fac-
ing out.
Styling: If starting formation is a Two-Faced Line, center dancers use hands up position for trading action
and blend into normal Mini-Wave styling. If starting formation is parallel Lines of four that results in cen-
ters facing no one, that couple joins hands with a couple handhold.

Linear Cycle (From waves only)
Starting formation: Any 4-dancer Ocean Wave
2. In one blended action, the new Leaders Fold (behind the Trailers) as the Trailers begin a Double Pass
Thru (or a Left Double Pass Thru if both mini-waves were left-handed before the Fold).
4. As the dancers complete the Double Pass Thru, each pair of Tandem dancers Peel to their right or left
depending on the handedness of their mini-wave before the Fold. The ending formation is Facing Cou-
ples.
Styling: The first part is performed using the standard styling for the Hinge. Then dancers drop hands
and dance with arms in natural dance position until reconnecting in a couple handhold as the call is be-
ing completed.
Dance action: The lead dancers do their part of Peel Off as the trailing dancers step straight forward and
take adjacent hands; everyone then does a Fan the Top.
Peel Off: Lead dancers walk in an approximate semicircle, away from the center of the starting
formation, to become the ends of a four-dancer line…
Fan the Top: The centers of the line or wave turn ¾ (270 degrees) while the outside dancers
move forward in ¼ circle.
Mantra/Reminder: Leaders turn out and move up ¼, Trailers step up and cast ¾.
Styling: Use same styling as in Swing Thru. Lead dancers have arms in natural dance position and adjust
hands to appropriate position for next call. It is important that dancers move slightly forward before
starting the "peeling" motion.

Dance action: Each dancer moves forward to the next position in the diamond, changing the original fac-
ing direction ¼ (90 degrees) toward the center of the diamond. Points become centers, and centers be-
come points.
Styling: It is important that dancers maintain diamond formation as they move diagonally from one posi-
tion to the next. Center dancers of diamond blend into hands up position as in ocean wave. Dancers at
the points maintain arms in natural dance position. Ladies may utilize skirt work.
Comments: If the call is directed to facing diamonds, all must pass right shoulders.
Dance action: The centers of the diamond do a Diamond Circulate to the next position the diamond,
while the points slide together and Trade.
Styling: From a normal diamond formation, all dancers blend into a couple handhold. If the starting for-
mation is a facing diamond, all dancers blend into hands up position as required for ocean wave basic.

Single Circle To a Wave
Starting formation: Facing Dancers
Dance action: Facing dancers join both hands with each other and Circle Left ½ way. Without stopping,
they drop hands with each other and individually Veer Left, blending into a Right-Hand Mini-Wave. If the
caller directs "Single Circle ¾ to a Wave", facing dancers join both hands with each other and Circle Left
¾, then continue to execute the rest of the call as above.
Styling: In circling, the two dancers are slightly offset to the left so that their dance partner in the circle
is more to their right than in front of them. Use smooth dance step, not buzz. When joining hands for
circle, right-hand turn palms up, left-hand palms down. Arms are bent comfortably at the elbows. Exert
a small amount of pressure while circling. Blend into a hands-up ocean wave position.
Dance action: Facing dancers join both hands with each other and Circle Left ¾. Without stopping, they

Trade the Wave
Starting formation: Any four-dancer Ocean Wave
Dance action: Dancers facing the same direction in the wave (every other dancer), Trade with each
other.
Styling: As in any trade, dancers first step slightly forward to clear the wave before turning toward
dancer with whom they are trading. Assume hands up position in basic ocean wave styling.
Comments: The Passing Rule applies (pass Right shoulders.) Right-Hand Waves become Left-Hand
Waves and Left-Hand waves become R9ight-Hand waves. Ends of the wave become centers and centers
become ends.
Chase Right
Starting formation: Two Couples Back-to-Back
Dance action: Each right-hand dancer does an exaggerated Zoom action, moving into the position previ-
ously occupied by the right-hand dancer behind him, to finish facing in the same direction as when he
started the Zoom action. (The net result is the same as if the right-hand dancer had done a right face U-
Turn Back and Box Circulate twice). The left-hand dancer follows ("Chases") the right-hand dancer by do-
ing a Box Circulate two positions. The call finishes in a Box Circulate formation.
Styling: All dancers have arms in natural dance position. Ladies' skirt work optional. Right hand dancer
uses flowing motion rather than an abrupt turn around. When two couples (for example, the heads) do
chase right in the center of the square, it is important for those doing the zoom motion to keep the ac-
tion tight and avoid bumping into the outside dancers. At the same time, those, not involved in the
Chase Right, move, if possible and comfortable, away from the center to allow more space for the ac-
tion.
Comments: Can also be described as the Right-Hand dancer doing a U-turn Back, away from partner,
and all Box Circulate 2 times.

Chase Left
Starting formation: Two Couples Back-to-Back
Dance action: Each left-hand dancer does an exaggerated Zoom action, moving into the position previ-
ously occupied by the left-hand dancer behind him, to finish facing in the same direction as when he

Turn Back and Box Circulate twice). The right-hand dancer follows ("Chases") the left-hand dancer by do-
ing a Box Circulate two positions. The call finishes in a Box Circulate formation.
Styling: All dancers have arms in natural dance position. Ladies' skirt work optional. Left hand dancer
uses flowing motion rather than an abrupt turn around. When two couples (for example, the heads) do
chase left in the center of the square, it is important for those doing the zoom motion to keep the action
tight and avoid bumping into the outside dancers. At the same time, those, not involved in the Chase
Left, move, if possible and comfortable, away from the center to allow more space for the action.
Comments: Can also be described as the Left-Hand dancer doing a U-turn Back, away from partner, and
all Box Circulate 2 times.
Dance action: The centers of the diamond do a Diamond Circulate to the next position in the diamond,
while the points Run ("Flip" 180 degrees) into the nearest center position and join hands to become the
centers of the new wave or line. When "flipping" a facing diamond, the points always take the inside
path, and the centers always take the outside path.
Styling: From a normal diamond formation, all dancers blend into hands up position as required for
ocean wave basic. If the starting formation is a facing diamond, all dancers blend into a couple hand-
hold.

the circle to join hands with the same person again in a stationary Thar Star or Wrong Way Thar forma-
tion.

facing, then completes the call as above (new centers Star left ¾, etc.). The ending formation is a station-
ary Wrong Way Thar.

one turn by the left ½ with the dancer they are facing and complete the call as above, ending in a sta-
tionary Thar Star formation.

dard star styling utilizing palm star hand positioning. Outside dancers moving forward have hands in nat-
ural dance position, ready to assume appropriate position for the next call. Ladies may use skirt work.

Gears and is a component of other “Spin” calls as well.

All 8 Flutterwheel (extended application/DBD)
Starting formation: Static Square or proceeding from an action resulting in “turning your partner left.”
Dance action: The right-side dancers (often the girls but not necessarily) leave their current partner and
Right-Hand Star with each other halfway to the opposite dancer (the one they were originally directly
across from). In a smooth continuous motion, they take couple hand holds and continue the Right-Hand
Star as a couple working as a unit to finish in a Squared Set.
Styling: Each dancer who is on the outside blends smoothly into a new couple by turning slightly to be-
come adjacent to the approaching dancer and reaching out to create a couple handhold. Some dancers
begin moving forward before contact is made and then walk slightly ahead of their new partner so that
the overall motion is smoother.
Dance action: The Left-side dancers (often the boys but not necessarily) leave their current partner and
Left-Hand Star with each other halfway to the opposite dancer (the one they were originally directly
across from). In a smooth continuous motion, they take couple hand holds and continue the Left-Hand
Star as a couple working as a unit to finish in a Squared Set.
