1983 / 72 1. World War II 1. Bel Kaufman was 28 - 34 years old

years old during World War II. This was a very
tough time for people, and many lost
their lives. Families were torn apart,
people had to leave their homes and
sometimes even their countries to
escape the fighting. Those who stayed
at home often faced shortages of food
and other basic things. There was a lot
of fear and sadness during the war, but
it also brought people together to fight
for a better future. As someone in their
early 30s, this was probably a time of
struggle and fear, impacting their lives
forever.

2. During The Great Depression, the

unemployment rates were so high that
people had no money left and had to
change their lifestyles. As a young 18
year old just becoming an adult, they
would feel like so many responsibilities

Depression to adjust by stitching new outfits from
old clothes, building furniture from
scrap lumber, and making quilts by
stitching together flour sacks. The
lifestyle they were growing up with in
their teen years during the era of the
roaring twenties then suddenly going
into the great depression had a
significantly negative impact on them.

3. Many people had families living in the

twin towers who may have lost their
lives. This was an incident that has
gone down in history and for people
living during that time, this may have
made them feel like they’re facing
racism. The whole U.S was affected by

this, and the nation was split apart. For

Bel Kaufman being a U.S citizen, we
can only imagine how hard it would
have been.
