Indication
Inclusion criteria
An isotonic solution used to maintain the patency of
intravenous and subcutaneous cannulae or for reconstitution of
injections : ad fe
Patients with an intravenous or subcutaneous cannula in situ
who require a flushing agent:
Prior to and after administration of individual drugs or fluids e.g
blood, to avoid incompatibilities or to ensure that the complete
dose is flushed through the cannula.
OR to maintain cannula patency in between drug administration
OR as a required diluent for medication

Patients who have any evidence of extravasations, pain,
discomfort, swelling, soreness, phlebitis or reddening around
the cannula site prior to administration of sodium chloride 0.9%.
Ensure that the drug/fluid being flushed through the line is.
compatible with sodium chloride 0.9%

Professional Registered nurses, paramedics and other professionals eligible
qualifications to use PGDs with the relevant training, see below.
‘A registered nurse, after discussion and agreement with the |
service/departmental lead
Has undertaken appropriate training for working under PGDs for
the supply and administration of medicines. Also completed
recognised training in intravenous administration of medicines
7 with updates every two years
Continuing education & | The practitioner should be aware of any change to the
training recommendations for the medicine listed. It is the responsibility
of the individual to keep up-to-date with clinical developments
as part oftheir continued professional development
| Referral Arrangements and Audit Trail E
Records/audit trail Along with the active drug the patient's name, address, date of
x birth. Contact details of GP (if registered). Diagnosis. Advice
given to patient (including side effects). Signature/name of staff
who administered the medication. Details of any adverse drug
reaction and actions taken including documentation in the
patient's medical record
Referral arrangements (including self-care)
Record the use of the PGD in the departmental log.
