(2006) ‘EA spouse’ and the crisis of video game labor

This article talks about how EA spouse has been criticized for pushing their employees to work long-
hours with no compensation. For the company to finish a video game in time, the management
forces employees to work overtime in order to complete the game before a set deadline. This article
is broken down into four subheadings “Enjoyment” which talks about the daily routines and the
benefits of working at EA. “Exclusion” goes into depth about gender inequality. “Exploitation”
examines how the company forces its workers to work overtime disregarding their mental state and
finally “Exodus” discusses how the workers decide to combat and act against the company for its
inhumane methods of work.

This article discusses the power imbalances and lack of female diversity in digital media. There are a
low number of female employees in the gaming industry, Due to this problem an initiative termed
Women in Games (WIG) has emerged to resolve this issue and provide support to female workers.
However, engaging in the discourse around gender-based diversity is not entirely successful when it
comes to complexities of equity, there needs to be a cultural focus on identity and how this leads to
inequality and oppression among women, this gave rise to an organization termed as Feminist in
games (FIG) whose objective is to invent equity.

DQ: Should EA be put out of business due to its crude work structure and employee dissatisfaction
levels? Why?
