T HE Q URAN

What is Tajweed?

Tajweed is the set of rules that govern the proper pronunciation of the Quran.
It is a critical aspect of Quran recitation, as proper pronunciation is necessary to
accurately convey the meaning and message of the text. Tajweed literally
means “to make better,” and it is a term that is used to describe the proper
application of the rules of pronunciation and articulation when reciting the
Quran.

What is Tajweed
In light of the talk of what is tajweed – T he term “tajweed” implies
“improvement.”

Tajweed of the Holy Qur’an is the understanding and implementation of

recitation guidelines such that the Qur’an is read as the Prophet Mohammed,
peace and blessings are upon him, recited it. Tajweed derives from the root
word “Jawdah,” which means “Quality.” It is Arabic for “improvement” or “to make
things better.” It is a linguistic term that signifies ‘proficiency’ or ‘doing
something well.’ When you apply this to the Qur’an, it is strong evidence that
each letter of the Qur’an gives him all his dues and full rights.

When we follow the principles of each letter we recite the Qur’an in a variety of

contexts. By doing so, we give all letters their rights by respecting the main

features of all it. Since the revelation of the Noble Qur’an, intonation and its
rules have been applied to it. In other words, when the angel Jibrael (AS)

recounted Allah’s words to Prophet Muhammad (Sallaho Alaihe Wassallam).

He recited them in a specific manner and demonstrated them to Prophet

Muhammad (Sallaho Alaihe Wassallam)

Tajweed Principles
Here is a list of some of the key principles of tajweed or tajweed rules:

Makhraj: T he points of articulation in the mouth where the different Arabic

sounds are pronounced.

Harakat: T he short vowel sounds that are added to certain letters to indicate
their pronunciation.

Sifat: T he characteristics of the different Arabic letters, such as whether they

are pronounced with a smooth or a harsh sound.

Maddah: T he elongation of certain sounds for a specific duration.

Ikhfa: T he partial or complete concealment of certain sounds.

Idghaam: T he merging of certain sounds together.

Ikhtihaar: T he pronounced release of certain sounds.

Qalqalah: T he vibration of certain sounds.

Tafkheem: T he emphasis placed on certain sounds.

Shaddah: T he doubling of certain letters for emphasis.

By learning and applying the rules of tajweed, Muslims can ensure that they are
properly pronouncing the Quran and accurately conveying its meaning and
message. Let’s know what tajweed is because it helps us recite in a manner
more like the way the Quran was revealed. All these reasons make all Muslims
strive to enhance and develop intonation and to master recitation in general.

T he holy Quran is Allah’s (SWT ) utterance, a divine message of kindness and

guidance from Allah Almighty to all humanity. It offers information, regulations,
and suggestions regarding all elements of life and references to the Hereafter.
T herefore, the Qur’an must be read with Tajweed to prevent error when
reciting the words of God Almighty completely. Making a mistake in a single
letter might lead to confusion or an incorrect interpretation of the entire
passage (ayah). Learning the tajweed principles enables us to pronounce Arabic
alphabets precisely as they should be spoken for our phrases to convey the
desired meaning.

It teaches us, for example, that “‫ ”ص‬and “‫ ”س‬are spoken differently and that
mixing them up in words might result in you intending one thing but
expressing another. Furthermore, reading the Quran with Tajweed is required
for all Muslims. In daily prayers, every Muslim should recite the Quran with
tajweed.

In the Holy Quran, Allah (SWT ) says:

Or add to it, and recite the Qur’an with measured recitation.

Practical Tips for Effective Tajweed Learning

Understanding the Qur’an requirements, knowing what is tajweed. It urges us
to find out how Arabic words are used and articulated so that we may
accurately retell the Qur’an. While studying tajweed might be intimidating for a
beginner because learning a language with remarkable norms from English
does not have to be.

T he following are the most helpful Tajweed learning tips.

Hire a Professional Instructor

Choosing to take tajweed lessons from a Muslim instructor has aided in my
learning of tajweed by getting online tajweed classes. It would help if you
had someone to show you the standards of tajweed, how to pronounce words,
identify locations of articulation of letters, discern between distinct sounds, and
so on. Just like you need someone to show you the Qur’an. An instructor
encourages you to assess your progress, identify errors, and learn the nuances
of the Arabic language. A skilled instructor will be able to teach you how to
learn tajweed and gradually improve your skills. However, it is not solely
dependent on the teacher because not everyone has access to personal
instructors to study Quranic tajweed.

Pay Attention to the Articulation Points of Arabic Letters

T he Qur’an contains numerous verses that must be read correctly and in order.
Every phrase utters correctly to honor Allah’s requirements (SWT ). It all starts
with how well you express the letter that becomes a word. You must first
understand the letters, their sounds, and their articulation. Which will assist you
in a significant amount in the accurate recitation.

In this case, you must first thoroughly practice the sound of each letter. T here
are several recordings and recitations of the Holy Quran available to assist you in
comprehending how to pronounce the terms you were wondering about. Aside

from that, keep attempting to stretch your tongue appropriately. If you are not
fluent in Arabic, you will need to practice it at the same time. Tajweed is more
straightforward for folks whocan speak Arabic or are native Arabic speakers.

Don’t give up
In light of the talk of what is tajweed our device is here for you: Don’t give up. It’s
difficult for an adult to learn the phonemes of a new language. Along those
lines, you’ll need a lot of perseverance and self-control to pull this out. You may
become discouraged if, despite your best efforts, you are unable to produce
the desired sound. Remind yourself why you’re doing this in these situations.

In the following hadith, the Prophet (saw) energized us in this way:

The one who is proficient in the recitation of the Qur’an will

be with the honorable and obedient scribes (angels).nd he
who recites the Qur’an and finds it difficult to replicate,
doing his best to repeat it in the best way possible, will have
a double reward. [Bukhari and Muslim]

Everything appears complicated at first, but this does not imply you should give
up hope. Failures occur, and several complications arise. However, you will be
learning from your mistakes and improving your overall performance. So don’t
give up.
