DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Procedure revision date: 09/01/2009

Engine Ignition

The Electronic Ignition (EI) system for the 2.3L engine contains the:

• ignition coil.
• spark plugs.
• spark plug wires.
• Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor.

The CKP sensor:

• is a variable reluctance sensor.

• is mounted on the engine front cover.
• is triggered by a 36-minus-1 tooth trigger wheel located on the crankshaft pulley and damper.
• provides ignition timing and crankshaft speed (rpm) to the PCM.

cardiagn.com
Refer to Section 303-14 for removal and installation of the CKP sensor.

The ignition coil:

• is controlled by the PCM.

• fires 2 spark plugs simultaneously.

The spark plug:

• ignites the fuel and air mixture.

The spark plug wire:

• carries high voltage pulses from the ignition coil to the spark plugs.

the Coil Terminal-to-Cylinder Relationship illustration in the Description and Operation,
Engine Ignition portion of this section. Failure to follow this instruction may result in poor
engine performance.

Remove the spark plug wires by slightly twisting while pulling upwards.

2. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connector.

3. Remove the 4 bolts and the ignition coil.

• To install, tighten to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).

4. NOTE: Wipe the coil towers with a clean cloth dampened with soap and water. Remove any soap
film and dry with compressed air. Inspect for cracks, carbon tracking and dirt.

To install, reverse the removal procedure.

• Apply silicone dielectric compound to the inside of the spark plug wire boots prior to
installation.
