LOCAL PRODUCTS

The principal economic sectors of Guimaras are tourism, handicraft, food processing, agriculture, and
fishing. It has picturesque island coves and stunning white sand beaches. The stunning coral reefs and
abundant marine life make it the best diving location. The island, however, is also well known for its
handicrafts such as woven "buri" bags, mats, baskets, and many more.

Arts and Crafts & Souvenir Products

The preservation of culture and tradition as well as sustainable arts and crafts are hallmarks of
Guimaras. A variety of locations in Guimaras are specialists in specific arts and crafts. For instance, the
Sapal Weaving Association, a weaving project and livelihood program, has received support from the
local government in San Lorenzo, Guimaras. It not only offers women's groups in weaving communities a
sizable additional source of income through the sale of their products made of baryos, pandan, and buri,
such as bags, laptop holders, placemats, slippers, wine bags, hats, and envelopes, but it also promotes
the use of green, reusable, and environmentally friendly materials.

The Aeta Community's Maruyog Charms are popular in Sitio Kati-Kati in the capital of Jordan. Three-
pieced bangles known as Maruyog Charms have been given a more contemporary and fashionable
appearance. As the Ati tribe upholds the culture and traditions of the indigenous peoples, the making of
these bracelets is an essential component of their culture. Moreover, the continuous production and
sale of these charms help alleviate the high poverty in the Aeta community by providing them with a
sustainable income that can give work to the youth and women.

In Concordia, Sibunag, a climbing vine with glossy, wiry stems known as “nito” is used to weave baskets,
bases, food covers, plates, wall decor, trays, lampshades, and other items. By producing these nito
woven goods, waste from the use of disposable plates, styrofoam food containers, flimsy decorations,
and breakable vases is reduced. These may be locally produced items, but they are certainly attractive.

Galleon-Making

The Department of Trade and Industry recognizes Guimaras as being the only province capable of
producing galleons or miniature boats. The construction of miniature boats includes the construction of
galleons, yachts, frigates, paraws, etc.

Due to their widespread use as wedding, convention, and conference souvenirs, these miniature boats
are both exported abroad and in high demand locally. The galleon industry has been recognized by both
the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources
(DENR) because manufacturers of model boats use trees that adhere to DENR regulations in the
production of their goods.
