Steps of 5S Methodology
5S Methodology Description
Seiri Eliminate whatever is not needed by separating needed tools,
(Sort) parts, and instructions from unneeded materials.
Seiton Organize whatever remains by neatly arranging and
(Set in Order) identifying parts and tools for ease of use.
Seiso Clean the work area by conducting a cleanup campaign.
(Shine)
Seiketsu Schedule regular cleaning and maintenance by
(Standardize) conducting seiri, seiton, and seiso daily.
Shitsuke Make 5S a way of life by forming the habit of always
(Sustan) following the first four S’s.

Example 2
You often see a computer desktop that looks like this. Keeping a computer
desktop this way creates problems like: a) difficulty to find files; b) files and folders
are grouped together without any logical filing system; c) don’t easily know where to
place new files (downloaded files, attachments, and temporary working documents);
and d) waste time in cleaning temporary/downloaded files when the desktop gets full.

Icons
• These are the small pictures that represent an object available to your computer.
Desktop picture or background
• It displays the colors and graphics of your desktop; you can change the desktop
background to look the way you want it such as using a picture. Also called
wallpaper.
Desktop
• It is your workplace on the screen.
Start Button
• It provides access to Windows 7 programs, documents, and information on the
Internet. Generally located in the lower left corner of the desktop.
Program buttons
• It launches Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, Windows Explorer and the
program buttons that you have chosen to pin to the taskbar.
Taskbar
• It contains the Start button and buttons that give you quick access to common
tools and the programs currently running. Generally located along the bottom of
the desktop.
Notification area
• It shows the notification icons, the current date and time and lets you update the
time and date. Also known as the system tray and generally located in the lower
right corner of the desktop.
Recycle Bin
• It contains files and folders that you delete. The deleted files contained in the
recycle bin can be restored and/or deleted.

Task 1
Directions. Identify what is described in the following items. Write the correct answer on

1. It is an organization system that prioritizes efficiency and effectiveness within the
work place.
2. Its goal is to eliminate clutter and clear up space by removing things that don’t belong
in the area.
3. Its goal of this step is to organize the work area. Each item should be easy to find, use,
and return: a place for everything, and everything in its place.
4. This step attacks the dirt and grime that inevitably builds up underneath the clutter,
and works to keep it from coming back.
5. Writing down what is being done, where, and by whom, you can incorporate the new
practices into normal work procedure.
6. The stage to develop discipline to perform the first four Ss.
