CRETIB
acronim is derived from the words: corrosive, reactive, explosive, toxic, flammable,
biological-infectious; and this is the classification of hazardous waste.
Hazardous waste is those that by its components affect living things and their envir
onment. Being highly harmful they have to be regulated and willing to avoid ecologi
cal disasters.
In the official standard NOM-052-SEMARNAT-2005 we can find more information a
bout it.
Characteristics of CRETIB hazardous waste
 Corrosive.
To be a corrosive residue, it must have a ph less than or equal to 2 or equal to 12.
52; steel must be aqueous and corroded at a rate greater than 6.35mm per year an
d at a temperature of 55 oC. Examples include: strong acids, strong bases, phenol,
hydracin.
 Reagent
They are very unstable residues and often react violently and immediately without
exploding; in addition, its backlash results in mixing with water, often generating tox
ic gases, fumes and fumes in sufficient quantities to cause damage to health or the
environment. Examples include magnesium, alkaline metals, nitrates, magnesium
 Explosive.
They are explosive residues, if when mixed with water they easily form a reaction o
r decomposation detonating at 25 oC and 1 atm. Examples include:
plycric acid, chlorates, peroxides, trinitrolucene.
 Toxic
A residue is considered toxic if it has the potential to cause death, serious injury, or
has harmful health effects, whether it is ingested, inhaled or has had direct contact
with the skin. Examples include: lead, arsenics and salts, pesticides.
 Flammable
This type of residue has as its properties being liquid and having a flashpoint less t
han 60oC, with the exception of aqueous solutions with less than 24%
alcohol; produce a persistent flame. Examples include: alcohols,
ethers and aldehydes, ketones, aromatic hydrocarbons.
 Infectious Biological
They are residues containing microorganisms and toxins capable of spreading dise
ase. Examples include: gauze with blood, cottons used for injections, syringes.
