2023 Niobrara Valley Prescribed Fire

Training Exchange (TREX) Application

Come learn and gain experience with prescribed fire at the 2023 Niobrara Valley TREX,
held from April 9 - 22, 2023. Training will be held at the Nature Conservancy's Niobrara
Valley Preserve, while prescribed burn exercises will be conducted on the preserve and
other private properties in the river valley and surrounding Sandhills.

This training is designed to integrate a diverse group of fire practitioners, including: private
landowners, volunteer fire departments, university students, municipal, state, federal and
contract firefighters, as well as other natural resource managers, scientists and
researchers. For participants with NWCG taskbooks, trainee positions most applicable to
the Niobrara Valley TREX include: Prescribed Fire Crewmember, FFT2, FEMO, FFT1, FIRB,
ENGB, & RXB2. Please contact Amanda Hefner to discuss other trainee positions. Prior
prescribed fire experience is not required. Participants with no experience will receive
one-on-one coaching.

The training is organized as an incident, using the Incident Command System following a
Type 3 structure. Participants will serve in qualified and trainee firefighting positions on a
burn team and will assist with preparing, scouting, briefing, igniting, holding, mop-up, and
patrol on numerous prescribed fires in the area. We will also complete pre- and post-fire
monitoring, train with various equipment, practice fireline leadership skills, and learn about
local fire ecology and management.

Additional trainings will include burn planning and considerations for burn unit layouts.

There is no registration fee associated with this TREX. This program is funded by a grant
by the Nebraska Environmental Trust. Participants are responsible for the costs of
traveling to the preserve and from the preserve once training is concluded.

 REQUIREMENTS
1. There is no minimum number of days required for attendance. Facilitated instruction
and live fire will occur throughout the
event as the weather allows.
2. Participants working on NWCG positions need to be current with refresher
course/pack test and arrive with initiated
taskbooks.
3. Participants must have personal, or employer provided medical insurance.
4. Participants should come prepared for both live fire field exercises and classroom
instruction.
5. Participants must bring fireline-approved boots (all-leather work boots, 8 inches tall,
with non-slip soles and no steel toe).

Though not required, we strongly suggest receiving your supervisor's approval prior to
participation.

If you are a paid employee, home units will be responsible for paying your wages while
participating at this training. Participants and/or employers are responsible for all
logistical and administrative arrangements regarding paid or vacation time, and any
overtime accrued during TREX. It is likely we will be working over 8 hour days each day.

Government employees: a "P Code" will not be assigned to this project incident.

 PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AND EQUIPMENT CONTRIBUTION.
During all live fire drills, participants are required to wear the proper personal protective
equipment (PPE) that follows the National Wildfire Coordinating Group's (NWCG)
guidelines. This equipment includes fireline-approved boots (all leather work boots, 8-
inches tall, non-slip soles and no steel toe), a Next Generation Fire Shelter, a hard hat,
Nomex clothing, all leather gloves, eye protection and canteens for drinking water.
Participants that do not own PPE will be able to borrow it free of charge, except for boots.
Participants must bring their own boots.
