Faculty Position: Sustainable Building Energy Systems

Nominations and applications are invited for a full-time tenure track faculty position in the area
of Sustainable Building Energy Systems with a particular emphasis on control and optimization
for energy management. Appointment at the level of assistant, associate, or full professor will
be considered, depending upon the qualifications of applicants. The appointment will be in the
mechanical group of the Department of Architectural Engineering with a joint appointment in the
power and control group of the Department of Electrical Engineering. The purpose of the joint
appointment is to stimulate collaboration between the areas of advanced building power
systems engineering and building mechanical systems engineering within the two departments
and support sustainability initiatives University-wide.

A successful candidate will have a broad understanding of buildings and building construction;
expertise in building mechanical systems and controls, and possess strong research capabilities
in one or more aspects of building automation such as optimal control methods, fault detection,
or distributed sensor networks applied to the efficient production and use of building energy
supplies.

The position requires teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, development of
an externally funded interdisciplinary research program and supervision of graduate students
conducting thesis and dissertation research. The successful candidate is expected to contribute
to existing interdisciplinary organizations focused on sustainable buildings, including the Center
for Sustainability, the Indoor Environment Center, and the Applied Research Laboratory, among
others.

Candidates should hold an earned doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural

Engineering (AE) or a related discipline appropriate for an AE faculty member in the building
mechanical and energy systems area. Professional engineering registration is desirable but not
required.

This position is partially supported by the resources of the Penn State Institutes of Energy and
the Environment (PSIEE) as part of a university-wide energy initiative.

Review of applications will begin in November 2008 and continue until the position is filled. The
intent is for the position to be filled no later than the beginning of the 2009-2010 academic year.
