What This Module is About

This module is all about slope. You will learn that a slope can be found
anywhere even on the the things that surrounds us.

Aside from understanding what a slope is, you will learn also the different
ways on how to solve or find a slope given two points, a graph, and an equation.

After learning the module, you are expected to apply the concepts in a real
life situation.

What I Need to Know

At the end of this module, you should be able to:

1. Describe and illustrate the slope of a line.

2. Explain how to find the slope of a line.
3. Solve the slope of the line given two points, equation and graph.
4. Show appreciation on the application of slope in real-life.

i
How to Learn from this Module
To achieve the objectives cited above, you are to do the following:
• Take your time reading the lessons carefully.
• Follow the directions and/or instructions in the activities and exercises
diligently.
• Answer all the given tests and exercises.

What I Need to Know

Slope

Shown at the right is the picture of Mount Mayon. It is one of the fascinating
volcanoes in the Philippines because of its almost symmetrical conical shape. The
approximate steepness of the volcano is labelled by
the line.
The slope of the line can be used to describe
how steep Mount Mayon is.

Activity 1 Discover
Below are equations that use the variable x, where x is any real number.
1. 3.
2. 4.

1. For each equation, make a table to find the coordinates of three points.

2. Graph each equation on the same x – y plane (use ordered pairs in number 1).
Label each graph with its equation.
3. The equations can be described by the equation . Give the values of a.
4. How does the value of a affect the graph?

1
What Is It

From activity 1, the following can be observed:

1. In y = x, as you move from (1,1) to (2,2), x changes from 1 to 2 and y also

changes from 1 to 2. As x changes from 2 to 3, y also changes from 2 to 3,
and so on. The ratio of the change in y divided by the change in x is the
constant 1.

2. In y = 2x, as you move from (1,2) to (2,4), x changes from 1 to 2 and y also
changes from 2 to 4. As x changes from 2 to 3, y also changes from 4 to 6,
and so on. The ratio of the changes in y divided by the change in x is the
constant 2.

The ratio of the change in y (vertical rise) to the change in x (the horizontal run) is the
slope of the line.

A line can be described by its steepness or slope. The slope m of a line can
be computed by finding the quotient of the rise and the run. That is,

Taken from Mathematics 8 Learners Module

1. How did you find the slope of the line?

2. What is the trend of the graph? is it increasing? Or decreasing?
3. What is the slope of each increasing graph? What are the signs of the
slopes?
4. What is the slope of the decreasing graph? What is the sign of the slope?

Finding the Slope Given an Equation

There are two types of equation. These are:

1. Slope-Intercept Form

2. Standard Form

In finding the slope given an equation, the equation must be in the slope-
intercept form,

Where;

= represents the slope

= y-intercept

Example 2

Find the slope given

Solution:

Since the equation is in the slope-intercept form, it is easier to identify the

slope. The slope then which is represented by is

Finding the Slope Given a Graph

Example 3

Find the slope of the given graph.

2
Solution:

1. Remember the slope formula which is

2. Identify/Locate two points in the graph. In the graph, it is labelled as 1 and 2.

3. From point 1, count the number it rises downward (vertical). It gives you -14. Now for
the run (horizontal), count from left to right going to point 2. It gives you 10.

4. Substitute the values obtained on the slope.

2. How do we determine the slope?
3. What are the differences between positive and negative slope?
Zero and undefined slopes?
4. How to find the slope of a line?
5. How do we rewrite slope intercept form to standard form or vice
versa?

Activity 5

Directions: Find any inclined object or location that you could see in your school or
surroundings then determine its steepness.

Follow-up Questions:

1. How did you find the steepness of the inclined object?

2. Have you encountered any difficulty in determining the steepness of the
object? Explain your answer.
