INTAKE : UCFF2017CT
LECTURER : Vijayalaxmi
DATE ASSIGNED : 06 December 2021 (Week 5)
PROPOSAL DUE DATE : 23 December 2021 (Week 7)
FINAL SSUBMISSION DUE DATE : 4 February 2022 (Week 12)
Students are required to study and research the architecture and network of an embedded
computer system. Students are given the freedom of choosing the type of embedded computer
system for their research. This assignment consists of 2 sections (with group and individual
components), which must be submitted separately in Moodle link. Please refer to instructions
for each section.
Section A – Group Proposal and Individual Research (CLO2)
Section B – Group Presentation (CLO3)
GROUPING
Each group can consist of maximum FOUR (4) students.
Choose any (ONE) 1 type of embedded computer system as the subject of your
research. It SHOULD NOT be a laptop or desktop. Examples of embedded computer
system: digital watches and MP3 players, to large stationary installations like traffic
light controllers, programmable logic controllers, and large complex systems like hybrid
vehicles, medical imaging systems, and avionics. (which brand which model)
You are required to write a proposal to justify the selection of the embedded system as
the subject of your research. This embedded system is made of several computer
components which can be categorized into CPU, Memory, Storage, and I/O controller.
Discuss the architecture of the chosen system and draw the system architecture in a
form of a visualized / block diagram to be submitted with the proposal.
Write the proposal in group to describe the subject of your research. Your proposal
should consist of:
Introduction and history of the embedded system
Importance of the chosen embedded system and its functionalities
Minimum 3 reasons of choosing the system
System Architecture diagram (with explanation on the components)
References (minimum of 5) - APA Referencing
Word count: +- 1500 words.
Group Leaders must submit the proposal to Moodle (APSpace). For those who failed to
submit the proposal on the above-mentioned date, project marks for the whole group
will be automatically deducted without warning.
Most of computer systems nowadays are designed with the ability to communicate
between devices in sending and receiving data throughout some form a network. Even
for embedded computer systems, they are equipped with various communication
functions such as phone calls, server connections, web browsing, messaging, email,
entertainment, sensors and many more. (Bluetooth/Cellular/Wifi/Wire
connection/Hotspot/RFID)
There are various standards and protocols related to networking which are involved to
make all these functions work. Each student needs to choose ONE (1) example of the
communication function within the chosen embedded system and discuss the following:
Write a report to document the individual research and investigation. The report should
be between 1500-2000 words (per individual student).
1. Table of Contents
2. Introduction
3. Content
4. Conclusion
5. Individual Reflections
6. References – min 5.
2. Your report must be typed using Times New Roman font. Expected length is 2000 to 2500
words (excluding title, table of content & appendix). Report should be in 1.5 spacing.
3. Plagiarism is a serious offence and will automatically be awarded zero (0) marks.
4. All information, figures and diagrams obtained from external sources must be referenced
using the APA referencing system accordingly. Minimum of 5 references.
You are required to record a group presentation to summarize your research and findings in
Section A. Focus should be given to introduce the embedded computer systems to the audience
as well as demonstrating your learned knowledge of operation of modern computers and
networking systems and ability to relate it to a community and workplace
Presentation slides (max 10 – 15 slides)
Meeting the duration of the presentation (20 - 30 minutes)
Group Leader will submit the presentation video and slides (with link to the presentation video)
in Moodle.
