CHAPTER ONE
1.1 INTRODUCTION

As part of the University requirement, industrial attachment training is an important aspect of the
curriculum of the University which fulfill partial require for award of Higher National Diploma.
Without industrial attachment training, a person can’t complete a course of study in this noble
and reputable institution.

Virtual industrial attachment was established nine years ago. Industrial attachment was
organized for students who cannot go out to do their attachment or could not get a place to do the
attachment. The purpose of the attachment is to equip students with practical knowledge, which
will enable them to fit into the industry when they go out.

The attachment challenges students to learn so many things during the period. Students become
familiar with certain things in the industry of IT during the attachment programme. The
attachment period is a maximum of three weeks. The program started from June 3, 2019 and
ended successfully on June 21, 2019. Work starts from 8:00am and ends at 5:00pm each working
day during the attachment period. This report contains what I actually learn during the VIRA
programme organized by Koforidua Technical University.

During the attachment programme supervisors visited us to make sure students take the Vira
attachment very serious which will enhance their practical knowledge in the field of their study.
This actually led to the awesome and fabulous success of the programme.

1.2 THE AIM OF THE INDUSTRIAL ATTACHMENT

The virtual industrial attachment was established to solve the problems of lack of adequate
practical skills required for employment in industries. The programme is created for students of
Higher National Diploma (HND) and Diploma in Business Studies (DBS) to enable them
practices those things they have learnt theoretically during their lecture hours.
It exposes students to the practical field of their study. The exercise reveals students skills as
well as inspiring students’ ambition to become useful citizens in the future. It helps make
students interact with highly respected and educated professionals in the industrial.

1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE INDUSTRIAL ATTACHMENT

Industrial training provides the impetus for the students to comprehend and appreciate real-life
working experiences. Employers are increasingly looking beyond a graduate’s academic
knowledge and whether they have what is known as employability skills. Students may realize
their ambition and ascertain their career path from the experience gained during industrial
attachment.

The some of the objectives of the Industrial attachment programme are as follows:

 To provide an opportunity for students to discover, learn about and familiarize with
industry of their disciple.
 To provide an opportunity for students to observe real-life practices and implementation
of theoretical lessons and principles. Students will acquire practical skills and
experience.
 Students will be able to work under supervisions.
 To develop technical, interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
 To instill work ethics in students
 To gain critical thinking skills

1.4 DAILY REPORT ON ATTACHMENT TRAINING

WEEK ONE

DAY 1
In the morning getting around 9:30am, orientation was officially lunched for the Industrial
Attachment. Mr. Peter Y. Kosoe gave a brief speech about the purpose of the Industrial
Attachment. In addition, Mrs. Smile Gavua Didzi the vice chancellor of Koforidua Technical
University officially launched the Industrial Attachment. Around 10:45am, the orientation was
over. Few minutes later, we were divided into groups and each group was given class known as
class office.

COMPUTER HARDWARE

Resource Person: Mr. Baah Fabian

In the afternoon, we learnt about introduction to computer hardware, troubleshooting and

opening and assembling of laptop. A laptop is a machine that consists of many components such
as Processors, Hard drives, capacitors, transistors resistors and many others. Bluescreen of death,
black screen of death, Power failure are some of the problems of the laptop.

Before you can repair a laptop, you need tools such as multi meter, tweezes, station rework
machine, screwdriver side cutter and others.

We did research on the component and their functions. This helped me to know more about the
functions of the components in a laptop.

DAY 2

We learn about the functions of the various tools. Tweezes is used to remove, hold, plug
components on the motherboard. Screwdrivers is use for screwing and unscrewing (inserting and
removing) screws on a laptop. Multi meter is an electronic measuring instrument that combines
several measurement functions in one unit. Station rework machine is use to heat devices and
melt solder, and specialized tools used to pick up and position often-tiny components.

I used the multi meter to test components on the motherboard to know whether the components
is working or not.

Testing of a components with a multimeter on a motherboard

Power off the circuit containing the resistor you want to measure. Never measure a resistor in a
circuit with a live current running through it.
Touch one multi meter probe to each other lead of the resistor. If the leads not accessible, touch
the probes to the point where the lead is soldered to the circuit. Observe the reading on the
display. A good resistor should test within its rated range. A bad resistor will show either infinite
resistance or a measurement for higher than its rated resistance. If the first and the second lead
bumps, then the resistor is faulty.

DAY 3

On the next day, we learn how to install windows on a laptop. Some windows require specific
module of laptop type before you can install windows. Windows 10 needs about 3GB of RAM
memory to do installation.

How to Install Windows 10

Make your pen drive bootable and insert it. Power on the computer. Press and hold F2 to enter
setup. This key may also be a different key—most computers will display a message on startup
that says, "Press key to enter setup" or something similar, so look for this message when your
computer restarts to confirm the key you should press to access the BIOS. Navigate to the Boot
tab. You will use the arrow keys to select it. The Boot tab may instead say Boot Options,
depending on your computer's manufacturer. Select a device from which to boot. You have a
couple of options here: a USB flash drive, select the Removable Devices option. Press the + key
until your boot option is first. Once Removable Devices is at the top of the list, your computer
will select your choice as its default boot option. On some computers, you will instead press one
of the function keys (e.g., F5) to navigate an option up to the top of the menu. Save your settings.
You should see a key prompt (e.g., F10) at the bottom of the screen that correlates to Save and
Exit; pressing it should save your settings and restart your computer. You may have to press ↵
Enter to confirm the changes.

Installing

Click Next when prompted. Click Install Now. Enter your Windows 10 key and then click Next.
If you do not have a Windows 10 key, instead click Skip in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
Click the "Accept" box and click Next. This will indicate that you accept the terms of use. Click
Custom to clean install Windows 10 on your computer. Doing so will prompt you to select a
partition to format before continuing. Wait for Windows 10 to install. This process may take
some time. If prompted to press a key in order to boot from a CD, do not press a key.

DAY 4

SATELLITE INSTALLATION
Resource Person: Mr. Derrick Ntiamoah

When we talk of satellite, what is it? He asked and said, “A satellite is a moon, planet or machine
that orbits a planet or star. For example, Earth is a satellite because it orbits the sun. Likewise,
the moon is a satellite because it orbits Earth. Usually, the word "satellite" refers to a machine
that is launch into space and moves around Earth or another body in space. Earth and the moon
are examples of natural satellites. Thousands of artificial, or man-made, satellites orbit Earth.

He again explained satellite dish to us. A satellite dish is a telecommunications device used to
send and receive microwave signals. It is a parabolic shaped antenna used for data transmission
and broadcasting. To get multiTV, strong, DSTV, and francophone channels, a satellite dish
must face east. That is where those satellites are found.

LNB (Low Noice Block) is use to convert the signal into graphical user interface that is pictures
on the screen of the Television. After fixing the satellite dish, finding the signal is the most
difficult one. To make it easier for you, get satellite finder. After the lesson, we all learn how to
assemble the satellite dish.

WEEK TWO

DAY 5

A decoder is a device used by satellite TV providers like Dish Network and DIRECTV to take a
signal from an orbiting satellite and convert it into watchable TV programming. Knowing how to
configure example multiTV decoder means you can also configure others such strong, DSTV
and others. Configuration procedure

Select MANUAL SEARCH and press OK.
Press green button on the remote to edit the frequency.
Select MODIFY. Press OK. Input 12522 Press OK.
Select POLARIZATION.
Press the RIGHT button on the OK to change to vertical. Press OK.
Then select SYMBOL RATE 27000 Press on the BLUE BUTTON to save and exit OK to start
scanning.
Move channel down knob to start search. Press OK to start scanning. Press exit.

DAY 6

We went outside the classroom office to fix the satellite and got station multiTV channels.
Procedure in fixing the satellite dish.
First, install the dish using the dish manual. The dish comes with a round plate, a dish cap, a
stand, an LNB and an LNB holder, dish accessories. Assemble the dish, and then carefully fix
the LNB in its holder at the last end of the angle bar. Mount the stand with the four holes at the
rear end on a wall where you deem fit. (The stand has eight holes all together. When fixing the
stand, be careful not to bend or turn the stand at the wrong position. Hence, first hold the stand
firmly with your hands as if mounting the dish, then see if the dish is well fix in a way that it can
track signal while facing the east direction. If everything is okay, mount the stand on the wall).
Use normal nails on a facial board and use concrete nails for a wall. Mount the dish in a place
where there are no objects blocking the signal (e.g. tall buildings, planted trees, human object,
thick electric cables etc). After mounting the dish, tighten it partially to allow for adjusting and
turning. This is because you may have to turn the dish vertically and horizontally until the signal
shoots or flashes. Connect the coaxial cable from your dish to the receiver using the connecters.
Connect it into the receiver’s LNB input.

DAY 7

We treat detecting fault associated with both satellite dish and decoder. With the satellite dish, so
many faults can cause multi TV signal to stop. Satellite dishes need to be aligned very accurately
to get a signal, because of the way the work and the frequencies that they use. It is not easy to
align a satellite dish by eyesight alone or by looking at the direction of the neighbour’s satellite
dish. For satellite dishes to work they need a clear unobstructed view of the satellites in space. If
trees are blocking your satellite signal, the only option to get it working really is to move it. It is
possible that the LNB itself has become faulty; this is very common like all electrical equipment
can just develop a fault for seemingly no reason. As satellite signal are beam down to earth from
satellites in space, atmospherics and weather conditions can affect your satellite TV reception,
particularly heavy rain and cloud cover and electrical storms.

With the decoder, improper cable inserting in the decoder. Poor configuration on the decoder can
also prevent TV from showing.

DAY 8

SERVER ADMINISTRATION
Resource Person: Mr. Emmanuel Opoku Debrah

We did install VMWare unto our machines and install windows server on it. After, we learn
about the some of the policies governing work office used to set policies for the machines in the
work place. We again, learn about the windows server environment. How to configure and add
device on the network to the server.

DAY 9

We were introduced to how to install active directories on the windows server on the VMWare.
Active Directory has become the cornerstone of Windows Server domains. It is the core of many
network environments supporting not only users and computers, but also applications like
Microsoft Exchange Server. Active Directory was first introduced in Windows 2000 Server and
has evolved with more reliability and features with each server operating system release.

WEEK THREE

DAY 10
CABLE TERMINATING AND PACKET TRACER

Cable Terminating resource personal: Mr. Lordy Amankwah

In the morning, we learn how to terminate cables for networking nodes. Cable Termination is the
connection of the wire or fiber to a device, such as equipment, panels or a wall outlet, which
allows for connecting the cable to other cables or devices. Cable used are twisted-Pair and
untwisted-Pair cables. Tools for Use with Twisted-Pair Cables: Cable Cutting Tools, Sheath
Removal Tools, Punchdown Tools and Crimping Tools.

In the afternoon, Mr. Emmanuel Opoku Debrah continue with us where we configured two
computers. In order to do so, you will need two computers, unshielded twisted pair cable
(crossover cable). We install cisco packet tracer. On the cisco packet tracer, after putting the
devices and connecting them, the next step is to configure it so that they can receive and send
messages. We did that in the cisco packet tracer and assign IP address to each one.

DAY 11

GRAPHIC DESIGN
Resource Person: Mr. Christian Osei Owusu

Our resource person let us those with laptops install CorelDraw on their machine. After he
introduced us to the various tools in it. Some of the tools in CorelDraw are rectangle tool, ellipse
tool, interactive fill tool, transparency tool, text tool, zoom tool, crop tool, shape tool, pick tool,
freehand tool and others.

After learning about the tools, he instructed us and help us to design calendar. In designing the
calendar, we used tools like rectangle tool, interactive fill tool, shape tool, pick tool, freehand
tool and colors. If anyone is facing difficulty in how to use the tools, he comes around and
provide help to that person. This make the lesson awesome and superb.

At the end of the work, I was able to know how the various tools were use in designing. I can
now do something on my own without the help of anyone. I can really say, I’m good in
designing.
DAY 12

On the next day, we learn about using some short cuts in the CorelDraw such as C for alignment,
control plus D for duplicate, control plus Z for redo, control plus X for cut, control plus C for
copy, control plus V for paste and many others.

After learning them, we did another calendar design to implement these techniques. We actually
manipulated these tactics in design of the calendar.

DAY 13
On this day was the closing day. The industrial attachment ended successfully with a closing
ceremony.
CHAPTER TWO

2.1 BENEFIT OF INDUSTRIAL ATTACHMENT

The industrial attachment gives great experience where you can apply technical knowledge and
method into practice. It improves versatility and help in boosting career. It also boosts
confidence once there is acquisition of skills about field of study. It provided an ability to
implement theory into practice. Industrial attachment provided clue on how the job environment
is about.

2.2 EXPERIENCE OF INDUSTRIAL ATTACHMENT

Most importantly, through the attachment I have learnt that as computer science or network
student you have to do most of the learning by yourself because the field keeps on changing now
and then. Continuous practice is very necessary if one wants to be professionally successful and
great.
CHAPTER THREE

3.1 PROBLEMS AND CHALLENGES

The attachment was impeccable and awesome but the problem that disturbed us was inadequate
internet infrastructure in the class environment. Most of things that were done require internet.
Apart from the internet which was a major problem, I will say everything was well organized and
success.

3.2 CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

CONCLUSION

The things I have learnt at the industrial attachment was remarkable. It has helped me to put my
theoretical knowledge into practice and learn more during the period. I thank all the resource
persons for really impacting what they know unto us.

RECOMMENDATION

I encourage the Koforidua Technical University to continue the attachment programme and help
students to join the Virtual industrial attachment programme because the merits are more than
the demerits. It has provided practical knowledge and students should take the industrial
attachment very serious.
