Chapter 7
Conclusions
7.1 Summary
An experimental study on the effectiveness of flat bottom and slope bottom TLD in
controlling the response of a structure subjected to harmonic ground motion is carried
out, The experimental results show that a properly designed TLD can significantly
reduce response of structure. This is because of additional damping provided to the
structure due 10 increased sloshing, For the given mass ratio, the effectiveness of
slope bottom TLD with 30° beach slope is significantly higher that compared with flat
bottom TLD. The effer
iveness of both flat bottom TLD and slope bottom TLD
increases with increase in mass ratio,
TLD with a smaller depth ratio, of the order 0.077, is an effective and robust device
for controlling response of structures subjected to harmonic ground motion of low
amplitude.
7.2 Major conclusions
Following are the major conclusions drawn from the experimental study.
1] The optimum depth ratio for low amplitude harmonic base motion is found to be
0.077
2] Both flat bottom and slope bottom TLD are more effective for structure with low
damping for same mass ratio.
3] It has been indicated in literature that high mass ratios are desirable From the table
6.11 and 6,12 the above statement is justified, indicated by higher effectiveness.
4] Higher the structural damping ratio the TLD becomes less effective for the same
mass ratio, To gain in effectiveness mass ratio is to be increased
1285] From the limited experimental study on slope bottom TLD it is found that slope
bottom TLD with 30° beach slope is found to be optimum, The effectiveness of slope
bottom TLD with beach slope other than 30° needs further investigation.
7.3 Scope of future work
> In the present study the base motion considered for the structure with TLD is
in one direction only. As an earthquake motion could be in any direction,
therefore
is worthwhile to investigate the effectiveness of TLD for
controlling the response of the structure when subjected to bi-directional
ground motion
> In present investigation the slope bottom TLD with beach slope 30° is found to
be more effective. The effectiveness of slope bottom TLD with beach slope
other than 30° needs further investigation.
mn of TLD for b
> The present study has focused on the appli ing
structures, considering them as SDOF system. Therefore, the effectiveness of
a TLD for controlling response of a MDOF system needs to be investigated.
