time you are in the country. You will be surrounded completely by the language wherever you go. Another
advantage is that you have to speak the language if you are with other people. In Italy, it is always possible,
in the class, to speak Italian if you want to and the learning is slower.
On the other hand, there are also advantages to staying at home to study. You don't have to make big
changes to your life. As well as this, it is also a lot cheaper than going to Britain but it is never possible to
achieve the results of living in the UK. If you have a good teacher in Italy, I think you can learn in a more
concentrated way than being in Britain without going to a school.
So, in conclusion, I think that if you have enough time and enough money, the best choice is to spend
some time in the UK. This is simply not possible for most people, so being here in Italy is the only viable
option. The most important thing to do in this situation is to maximize your opportunities: to speak only
English in class and to try to use English whenever possible outside the class.
1. People who don't have enough time and money should go to Italy to learn English. _____

The Internet has brought countless benefits for us. However, the ease of communication it has made is the
most important one for us. The previous ways of communication such as post mail, telephone and
travelling were expensive and time-consuming. But the Internet has made it possible to communicate with
others from a personal communication to a business communication. One can send an email with rich
media like video, image and multimedia presentation to anyone in the world only in few seconds. The
wide spread popularity of social media networks like Facebook and Google+ have made it possible to get
connected with friends, family members, colleagues and new fiends very easily . The smart phone with

In the early years of television, educational specialists believed that it would be very useful in teaching
and learning. Many schools have brought television sets, intending to use them effectively to improve the
quality of education; but actually they are rarely used properly in classrooms. Meanwhile, children
spending the majority of their out-of-school hours watching TV and their typical school days proceed as
if television did not exist.
29
There are some explanations for the failure of television to get the interest of the teachers. Firstly, the
schools that purchased television sets have not set aside money for equipment repairs and maintenance so
these television sets are sooner and later out of work. Secondly these schools have not found an effective
way to train teachers to integrate television into their ongoing instructional programs. Lastly, most
teachers do not regard the quality of television and its usefulness in the classroom.
Teachers at the schools work hard for at least twelve years to train their students to become good readers.
However, according a recent statistic, teenagers seldom spend their free time reading books and
newspapers but watching television instead.

XXXII. Read the following passage. Decide if the statements from 1 to 4 are True or False and choose the
correct answer (A, B, C or D) for the questions 5 and 6:
Every day on radio, on TV, and in newspaper, we hear, see or read about many problems in the world, for
example, pollution problems.
Air pollution is the first kind. It mostly comes from fumes released from motorbikes, cars, airplanes, trains
and poisonous gases emitted from factories. Also, waste is dumped anywhere, even in the city where many
people are living. The second pollution problem is sea pollution. Many people earn their living from
fishing in the sea, and the fish they catch feed many people. But the sea has become so polluted from oil
spills and factory wastes that fish are dying. This pollution is not only killing the fish, but is also affecting
those people who eat fish.
Seldom do you find a place nowadays that is not polluted. This problem is growing more difficult every
day. We must find a good solution that makes the world a better place to live.
1. We hear, see and read about pollution problems in the world through the media every day.

A. oil spills B. factory wastes C. smoke from factories D. A and B are correct
6. In order to make the world a better place to live, we _________
A. should not prevent pollution B. should find a good solution.
C. should kill the fish. D. None is correct.
The environment is everything around us, both natural and made by man. A major problem in the world
today is the destruction of the natural environment. This is a complicated problem. We burn fuel, and this
causes air pollution. We throw away plastic bags, containing toys and other objects. These stay in the
environment; they are not like paper or wood that slowly disappear. We have made thousands of new
chemicals. Factories that make or use chemicals always have chemical wastes. These are often poisonous
and they also stay in the environment. Since 1945 several countries have been testing nuclear bombs in
36
the air and underground. The explosions in the air cause nuclear fallout. The fallout causes cancer and
kills animals and people. Nuclear power plants that make electricity also produce dangerous wastes and
have accidents that can be very disastrous.
1. The environment is everything made by man.
2. The destruction of the natural environment is a simple problem.
3. Nuclear bombs were first tested in 1945.

resources are limited. Nobody knows exactly how much fuel is left. However, we also should use them
economically and try to find out alternative sources of power. According to Professor Marvin Burnham

Washington; Hurricane Andrew in Florida; the floods in the American Midwest; terrible earthquakes all over
the world, huge fires and so on. But I'll never forget my first personal experience with the strangeness of

The solar system is the Sun and the objects that travel around it. The Earth is part of the solar
system. The Sun is a star similar to the other stars in the sky but it is much closer to the Earth. The
Sun is mostly a big ball of gases composed mainly of hydrogen and helium.
There are seven other planets that travel around the sun, too. These planets, in order,
include Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Earth is located
between Venus and Mars. The path the planets use when traveling around the sun is oval-shaped
and is called its orbit. Each of the planets in the solar system takes a different amount of time to
orbit or travel around the Sun.
The planet Earth takes 365 days or one year to orbit the Sun. The other planets take more or less
time to orbit the Sun. It takes Mercury less than two months or 88 days to travel around the Sun.
The planet taking the longest time to go around the Sun is Neptune.
The planets of the solar system are also a variety of sizes and are made up of different substances.
The largest planet in the solar system is Jupiter. Over 1,000 Earths could fill the size of Jupiter.

Long ago a lot of people thought the moon was God. Other people thought it was just a light in the sky.
And others thought it was a big ball cheese!
The telescopes were made. And men saw that the moon was really another world. They wondered what it
was like. They dreamed of going there.
On July 20th, 1969, that dream came true. Two American men landed on the moon. Their names were
Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin. The first thing the men found was that the moon is covered with dust.
The dust is so thick that the men left footprints where they walked. Those were the first marks a living
thing had ever made on the moon. And they could stay there for years and years. There is no wind or rain
to wipe them off.
The two men walked on the moon for hours. They picked up rocks to bring back to earth for study. They
dug up dirt to bring back. They set up machines to find out things people wanted to know. Then they
climbed back into their moon landing craft.
Next day the landing craft roared as the men took off the moon. They joined Michael Collins in the
spaceship that wait for them above the moon. Then they were off on their long trip back to earth.

A UFO (Unidentified Flying Object) is any object flying in the sky which cannot be identified by the
person who sees it. Sometimes the object is investigated. If people can still not figure out what the object
is after an investigation, it is called a UFO. If they figure out what the object is, it can no longer be called
a UFO because it has been identified.
