The longer a transition a shot or an edit takes, then the more contemplative it feels.

The longer a transition takes, the more time elapses between the shots.

A cut usually has no time pass between times. gives another view of a space

If time passes between cuts, then there needs to be something that tells us that time has passed
between the shots.

Dissolves will give you more time to think between shots. Good way to let you take in what has
happened already, instead of letting you anticipate what’s going to happen.

A dissolve will almost always indicate that some time has passed between shots.

Usually, a section break.

Usually fade-out to a fade-in.

An exaggerated dissolve.

A stopping of one way a story tells.

Wipe sits between a cut and a dissolve.

Can assume that some time has passed, but not a whole lot.

Bring some form of dynamism.

Usually used as a throwback as wipe isn’t used anymore

Relations between shots:

Graphic:

Allows you to make comparisons between the shots.

Graphic crashes are good at making abrupt transitions.

Emphasizes difference between tones.

Good at orienting transitions.

Good at telling people apart.

Rythmic:

Brief takes are more hectic, and longer takes make people more relaxed.
Diagetic:
Spacial:

Gives an awareness of space

Looks left, and it cuts to courtyard, so it allows you to make that distinction that he is talking at the
courtyard.

match on action has a start of an action and ends it after cut. Very good at hiding cuts as focus is on
action and not cut.
Temporal:

Cross cutting: Cutting back and forth between shots in real shots, which gives you a sense of perspective
between shots. Crosscutting gives a sense of suspense, and used in action movies.

Gives you a sense of tone what happens during some time. You don’t know what happens, but you get
an idea of the tone.
Continuity system

There are 3 steps to the continuity system.

Establishing shot:
First you need an establishing shot. Which establishes where the characters are, and it gives a sense of
space.
Once that has been established, hen you can start focussing on one character at a time.it will stay in a
character unless there is a good reason. Like if someone is nervous, then it will stay in that person, to
divert attention to that person itself.

Establishes the space again if a character moves.

Once left and right is established, then you don’t deviate from it.

Draw a line between characters. Once you shoot from one side of the line, then you are not allowed to
go to the other side of the line.

More intimate way to view a scene.

Allows POV shots very easily. When cutting along the axis, you see more of the space.
Usually works when the person looks one way and looks another way, and then the axis moves from the
person.
