Topic: Visiting the museum. World museums. 06.03.

Goal:
to improve students’ listening and speaking skills; to focus students on talking
about museums and galleries;
to motivate students for becoming independent listeners; to develop students’
personal and social skills; to activate linguistic guess; to expand students’
vocabulary;
to provide a stable and welcoming atmosphere in the class; to develop self-esteem
and mutual esteem; to encourage students’ interest in art; to form students’ artistic
tastes.

Lesson duration: 90 minutes

Equipment: Student book (Карп’юк О. Англійська мова 10 клас), handouts with


useful vocabulary and practice tasks, whiteboard and markers, pictures of artworks
or exhibits

Course of the lesson


1. Warm-up (10 min)
1) Have you ever visited a museum and which one did you like the most?
2) Do ex. 1, p. 175.
In pairs, ask each other the questions in turns. Express your point of view
and explain the reasons.
2. Vocabulary. (20 min)
1) Useful Vocabulary:
Admission - the fee paid to enter a museum;
Exhibit - an item or collection of items displayed for public viewing;
Audio guide - a device that provides information about exhibits;
Guided tour - a tour led by a museum guide;
Souvenir shop - a store selling items related to the museum or exhibits;
Gallery - a room or building used to display works of art;
Artifact - an object made by humans of historical or cultural importance;
Collection - a group of items of the same type, usually displayed together;
Tourist - a person visiting a place for pleasure or culture;
Display - to show or exhibit something publicly.
2) Gap-fill task. Complete the sentences using the correct word from the
vocabulary list:

d. I recommend taking an _________ guide to learn more about the
exhibits.

3) Answer the following questions about a museum visit:
a. What is your favorite exhibit at the museum?
b. Have you ever taken a guided tour of the museum?
c. What did you buy at the souvenir shop?
d. Did you use an audio guide to learn more about the exhibits?
e. How long did you spend at the museum?
4) Do ex. 2, p. 176.
In small groups, explain the meanings of the word combinations and make
up sentences with them. Share your information with the other groups.

3. Listening (10 min)


1) Do ex. 3, p. 176.
Listen to the advice and explain what you should do to get an audio guide.
4. Reading. (15 min)
1) Do ex. 5, p. 176–177. Read the information about the National Gallery of
London and describe your imaginary visit there.
2) Choose your variant of guiding and exploring the gallery. Don’t forget to
use some of the linking words:
First, second, next, further, last, finally, in addition, moreover, also;
So, as a result, therefore, thus, due to;
In fact, obviously, especially;
For example, such as;
Because, as, that is why, while, not only ... but also.
5. Creative work. (20 min)
1) Students' task is to work in pairs or small groups to create a dialogue
between a visitor and a museum employee. Students should use the
vocabulary and phrases they have learned.
2) Students should then present their dialogues to the class.
6. Discussion. (10 min)
1) Do ex. 4, p. 180–181.
In groups, read the information about Kyiv museums. Discuss and choose
one of them to visit. Explain your choice to the class. use the words and
phrases from the “useful language” box, p. 180.
7. Homework (5 min)
1) Use the information from ex. 4, p. 180–181 to write a brief paragraph
about one of the museums in Kyiv. Describe your imaginary visit to chosen
museum.
Mention:
it s name and location;
days and hours of museum’s work;
brief information about special features of the collection;
the most significant items of the collection;
your own impressions.
2) use the words from the “useful language” box, p. 180 and the linking
words of the lesson.
