INTRODUCTION TO LISTENING
ENGLISH ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM 1

INTERACTION

LISTENING SKILLS
Listening is the ability to accurately receive and interpret messages in the communication process.
Listening is different from hearing. Hearing is merely receiving the sounds, but listening is being aware
of both verbal and non-verbal messages to be able to correctly perceive and understand the
messages.

Various studies stress the importance of listening as a communication skill. A typical study points out
that many of us spend 70 to 80 percent of our waking hours in some form of communication. Of that
time, we spend about 9 percent writing, 16 percent reading, 30 percent speaking, and 45 percent
listening. Studies also confirm that most of us are poor and inefficient listeners

You can be an effective Listener if you follow these 10 Principles of Listening (“Listening Skills, 2015).
1. STOP TALKING. When someone is talking listen to what he is saying; do not interrupt, talk while
he is talking, or finish his sentences for him.
2. PREPARE YOURSELF TO LISTEN. Relax, focus on the speaker, and forget other things.
3. PUT THE SPEAKER AT EASE. Show you are listening and understanding what he is saying by
maintaining eye contact and nodding or using gestures that encourage him to continue speaking.
4. REMOVE DISTRACTIONS. Focus on what is being said. Do not disrupt the listening process by
sending messages that you are bored or distracted, such as doodling, shuffling papers, looking out the
window, texting, picking your fingernails, or talking with someone near you.
5. EMPHATIZE. Keep an open mind to the speaker’s views and opinions. If you disagree with what he
is saying, wait, and prepare an argument to oppose it, but do not be prejudiced; consider the issues
objectively.
6. BE PATIENT. If the speakers pauses to formulate what to say and how to say it, let him continue in
his own time; never interrupt or finish a sentence for him.
7. AVOID PERSONAL PREJUDICE. Bear in mind that everybody has a different way of speaking, so
do not let the speaker’s habits or mannerisms distract you from what is being said. Just focus on what
he is saying and try to ignore his styles of delivery.
8. LISTEN TO THE TONE. Every speaker varies the pitch, tone, and volume of his voice depending on
the situation; let these voice qualities help you understand the emphasis of what is being said.
9. LISTEN FOR IDEAS, NOT JUST WORDS. Connect pieces of information; get the whole picture,
not isolated bits and pieces. With proper concentration, letting go of distractions, and focus, this very
difficult aspect of listening becomes easier.
10. WAIT AND WATCH FOR NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION. Listen not only with your ears but
also with your eyes; watch and pick up the additional information being transmitted via non-verbal
communication, such as gestures, facial expressions, and eye movements.

LISTENING EXAM
A typical complete listening test takes approximately 30 minutes. There are 4 sections and each may
contain more or less 10 questions. During the test, you are given time to read the questions, write
down your answers and then check them. You should write your answer on the question paper as you
listen. When recording ends, you are given 10 minutes to transfer your answer to an answer sheet.
The recorded material for the listening test is played once only.

In this module, you will try answering a complete listening exam. But before attempting a 40-question
test, first, you need to learn the different strategies in answering listening exam as each section is
gradually more difficult.

LISTENING SECTIONS
The listening audio material or test is divided as follows:

Sectio What kind of recorded material will I hear?

n

a conversation between two people (e.g. finding out information

1
about travel)
a monologue on a general topic (e.g. giving instruction about an
2
event)
a conversation between two or more people (e.g. students and a
3
teacher discussing)
a monologue in an academic context (e.g. a speaker giving a
4
lecture)

STRATEGIES IN LISTENING EXAM

Here are the tips that you need to remember at all times when answering a listening exam.

1. THREE STAGES OF LISTENING:

a. Before Listening. Read the question in advance. This will enable you to anticipate the
answer to the question.
b. During Listening. Do focus. Listen intently as the audio material is played once only. Fight
short attention span.
c. After Listening. Quickly review your answers then start reading the next question.

2. READ INSTRUCTIONS. Be very careful with the instructions as the proper format in writing the
answer is in it. Correct answer with inappropriate format will be marked wrong.
3. TAKE NOTES. Note taking is very important. Some of the most important details you need to take
note of are:
-names (A-N-G-E-L-O)

-numbers (09988765432, JBL01234)
-times (8:30 am / 1:00 PM)
-dates (26 January, December 25, September 8th)
-places (park, theatre, Scotland)
4. OBSERVE CORRECT SPELLING. It doesn’t matter if you write all your answers in lower case or in
CAPITAL LETTERS as long as all your answers are spelt correctly. Avoid texting (e.g. plipns, buk,
comunic8)
5. PAUSE MEANS ANSWER. When there is a pause, it means an answer was given already.
6. NO BLANKS. Ensure all questions are answered. If you miss the answer, guessing is your last
option, which is better than leaving the item blank.

TYPES OF LISTENING QUESTIONS

Below are the task types and concrete examples that you may find in any listening exam. You may
encounter one or three different tasks per section.

1. COMPLETION. You have to fill in gaps that cover parts of the listening text. Gap fill comes in
different forms such as:

a. Forms/Note
Completion

In order to answer any type of completion task, you need to identify the missing word/s from the
recording that fit into the question. You should not change the words from the recording in any way
and should keep to the word limit stated in the instructions.

2. SHORT-ANSWER QUESTIONS. In this task, you have to write an answer to a question using
information from the recording. You should read the instruction carefully as it indicates the word
limit given for each task.

3. MATCHING TYPE. You have to match a numbered list of items from the listening text to a set
of criteria. This task tests your ability to listen for specific detail. It is therefore often used with
texts dealing with factual information.

4. MULTIPLE CHOICE. This task may include a question followed by three possible
answers. You have to choose the one correct answer: A, B or C. You may need to understand
specific points or the main points of the listening text.

5. LABELLING A DIAGRAM, PLAN OR MAP. You have to complete labels on a visual such as
diagram, set of pictures, plan of a building or a map of a part of a town.

The answers are usually selected from a list on the question paper.

SUCCESS IN LISTENING
ENGLISH ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM 1
In the listening exam, your success will depend on knowing what information to listen
for. You are not expected to have any specialist knowledge, but you should be able to
deal with a range of topics and a number of different voices and accents. It may sound
difficult at this point, but once you tried at least one or two listening exercises, you will realize that
taking a listening exam is really easy. It is the easiest as compared to reading, writing, and speaking
because all the answers are provided by the speaker.
