The thirteen colonies


XVIII century: The British government increased control over its 13 American colonies and started
to impose new laws and taxes.
In 1773 a new tax on tea → Boston Tea Party. As a protest American patriots threw a large amount
of imported tea into the Harbour of Boston.

The colonies opposed Great Britain because they had no representatives in the British Parliament.

The War of Independence (1776-1783)
The colony chose delegates to represent them, but the British soldiers in America were ordered to
arrest the leaders of the American rebels in 1775. This started a war.

The representatives met in Philadelphia and appointed George Washington Commander in chief
(comandante in capo) of the American army.

On July, 4th 1776 they draw up the Declaration of Independence and declared their independence
from Great Britain.

This was the birth of the United States of America

The Constitution
-The British forces were defeated and the Treaty of Versailles was signed in Paris in 1783 and
Great Britain recognized the independence of the United States of America.
-In 1787 the US Constitution was signed. This document represented the foundation of the Federal
Government in the country
-George Washington was the first President and Washington became the capital city of the Union.

The Preamble
The Preamble The Preamble lists the reasons that the 13 original colonies separated from their
mother country, and became an independent nation.

"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice,
insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and
secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this
Constitution for the United States of America”.

The Constitution is our plan for government. The Articles of the Constitution talk about the duties
of the three main parts of government: the Executive Branch, the Legislative Branch, and the
Judicial Branch. The articles also talk about the separate powers of the Federal and State
government, and how to change the Constitution.
