How to Read a Research Paper

Multiple Passes
1. Title, Abstract, Figures
2. Intro, Conclusions, Figures,
skim the rest (skip related
works)
3. Read but skip/skim the math
4. Read but skip parts that do not
make sense

How to Read a Research Paper

Ask yourself
1. What did authors try to accomplish?
2. What were the key elements of the approach?
3. What can you use yourself?
4. What other references do you want to read?

How to Present Your Project Work

1. Make sure to explain what is the problem you are trying to solve and
how the task is formalized (classification? detection?
supervised/unsupervised?)

2. provide some background knowledge (related works: what other

works before this one did?)

3. indicate the key contribution of you work: what exactly did you
investigated, what aspect of the overall problem.

How to Present Your Project Work

1. Some details on the method/pipeline/algorithm.

Math is fine but make sure to define the notation. Figures/schemes
usually help here.

2. What did the experiment test?

3. Show and discuss the results.

4. Discuss the conclusions and what do you think it might be interesting

to investigate in future works.

How to Present Your Project Work

1. Do not get over time

2. Do not overload the slides with text

3. Make sure that the audience can get 1 take home message.

If there are things that sound unclear from the reference paper/code,
make sure to ask the TAs. My advice is to contact the TA at least once
before submitting the project.
