The Family and Community I Live In

For me, family and community are similar to each other in terms of how they are united as a one
unit and through my reflective essay we will what’s more into these two fundamental groups of people.
Before I can present my family and community that I belong, let me first define what is family and
community and how important it is for our individual goals and over-all well-being. So family is a group
of people that are connected with each other in terms of marriage, blood, or adoption but we also know
that it is not limited by biological relationship or what we literally think when we hear the word family.
We also often see other people that are not related to each other by blood or marriage but still call
themselves a family. So in general, we can define family as a group of people that are connected to each
other with the investment of emotion and brotherhood and that’s also why we consider our newly
formed circle of friends a family in a certain time.

So, what is Community? In general, community is just similar to family but just differs a little bit.
Community came from the latin word “communitas” meaning the same or in English, common, public, or
shared by many. This is where we can differentiate community to family. By the word origin, we can
therefore say that community is also a group of people that shares the common belief, ideology, and
importantly, interest or goals. We tend to join to a certain community because of our common interest
for which we can be called a stakeholder which are united as a one community regarding of the
differences of our goals. In Colegio De Muntinlupa community, we students, are stakeholders for we
share the average goal which is to graduate. Professors and faculty staffs are also stakeholders of their
own goals on the CDM community. In a nutshell, family is where we belong with the investment of
feelings while community is more of a common ground where we can aim for our personal goals and by
that we are also obligated to contribute to our community.

The family I belong in terms of my biological relation are a well-rounded family. We always
support the dreams or goals of each other and we value each of the member of our family. Those
includes me, my mother, father, two sisters, niece, nephew, and all in-laws. Majority of us are still living
in the same household because my one married sister is not capable yet to separate and to buy their
own home. My biological family might not be the perfect family in the world but for me, it is more than
perfect to have where we always look for each other and support each of our individualities. Another
family that I consider is my friends four well-founded group of friends where we always have each
other’s back and mainly celebrates each of our achievements and events either small or big. Other
community that I considers, my gaming community where we always play online games, roller-blading
community where we harness each of our skills together in the field of roller-blading. Moving on to the
communities of mine, those groups that I belong to, follows. First is the Colegio De Muntinlupa
community where our common ground is the geographical location or the institution itself where we
also share the same beliefs that knowledge is powerful and our common goal as student is to graduate
from this beloved school. Next important community for me is our family church where we share the
common belief of our creator and his Son, Jesus Christ. Here we worship the same God and also share
the common geographical location which is the physical church itself and the common goal which is to
be saved and finally meet our creator. Finally is my barangay community, specifically the Barangay
Cupang where me and my family is also a part of. Honestly, here I do not contribute a lot because I grew
up not extroverted enough on leading our barangay but now I’m looking into it. These are the family and
community where I belong and I am proud of all these groups where I find my belongingness, love,
safety, care, support and the field to grow myself and achieve my goals.
Why is Community Development Important in Nation-building?

So I already defined the definition of the community on my first reflective essay, now I
would be talking about the importance of community development in our nation building.
Before we discuss the true importance of community development towards nation building, let
us first define what is nation building. In my own words nation is a group with common culture
that shares the same language, religion, territory, and history. On the other hand, building
refers to the construction, development, or the structuralization of every component or
materials of a something. Therefore we can say that in our instance, Nation-building is the
construction or development of a group with common culture, language, religion, territory, and
history. Note that territory is sometimes insignificant in referring to a nation. Lastly, community
development is a collection of activities and programs that enable communities to effect social
change in their own lives.

Now that we know the terminologies, let us now dive deeper to the importance of
community development In building our nation. One importance is because it teaches people
to envision about where they are living, what surrounds them, and how to protect their
neighborhoods. Communities contribute to the social aspect of the nation in a sense that It
provides supports and appreciation towards a certain group or the target of a community
development. In terms of politics, community development can help raise the awareness of the
current issues of our nation and even provide solutions for it. For example, a local barangay or
institution thought of a new great idea on how to save our ocean, these can somehow affect
the congressman or the legislative to create a law that support this newly found idea for the
betterment of our nation.

In conclusion, there are so many significance of community development in our nation-

building.
