Constructing Disease Profiles

1.Study the material from the two countries (US and India), look for other data sources
and then summarize maternal mortality and trends separately for both countries.

Definition of maternal mortality: For the World Health Organization [WHO] (1992) it
is the death of a woman in pregnancy and up to 42 days after the termination of
pregnancy, where the cause is related exclusively to the management or complication
of pregnancy and not incidental to the pregnancy.
.
a. First, India's maternal mortality rate from 1990 to recent years shows significant
declines in deaths. According to WHO (2018), "the maternal mortality ratio has
declined from 556 per 100,000 live births in 1990 to 130 per 100,000 live births in
2016, resulting in a 77% reduction".
b. While the US maternal mortality rate has increased by 23% between the years
2008-2009 and 2013-2014 (Gynecol, 2018). However, the most affected group has
been women over and equal to 40 years of age, with the mortality rate found to be
three times higher than the mortality rate in age groups 25-29 years. In addition, it has
been found that in 2021, the maternal mortality rate was 31.3 for women aged 25-39
years, but the mortality rate for women aged 40 years was even higher at 138.5, which
shows that the problem is still ongoing (Howard, 2023).
c. In terms of the indicators used to make these findings, maternal mortality per 100,000
live births is evidently the most important.
