Independent software developers are those who are not owned by (or reliant upon) a single
publisher. Some of these developers choose to self-publish their games and rely on the Internet
and word-of-mouth advertising for marketing. Their products might not be as well known as
those of larger publishers like Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo if those companies lacked their
substantial marketing budgets. Independent game developers can now strike deals with console
manufacturers for wide distribution of their games thanks to the development of digital
distribution of cheap games on gaming consoles.
