ACTIVITY 1: ANCIENT ARTIFACT ANALYSIS


Objective: To explore the intersection of science, technology, and society in ancient times by examining
and analysing ARTIFACTS, TOOLS, AND MANUSCRIPTS from that era.
Materials:

 Notebooks or digital devices for taking notes


 Cameras or smartphones for documenting artifacts
 Research materials (books, articles, or online resources)
Instructions:
1. Select a museum or Online Collection: Depending on your location and resources, choose a local
museum or access an online museum collection that features artifacts and manuscripts from
ancient civilizations. Ensure that the collection has items related to science and technology in
ancient times.
2. Plan Your Visit: If you are visiting a physical museum, check their opening hours, admission fees,
and any specific exhibits related to ancient science and technology. If you are using online
resources, familiarize yourself with the website's navigation and search tools.
3. Artifact Selection: Identify a few artifacts, tools, or manuscripts that pique your interest. Look
for items that have direct or indirect relevance to ancient science and technology. Note their
names, descriptions, and locations within the museum or online collection. SELECT ONLY 1,
EITHER ARTIFACTS, TOOLS, OR MANUSCRIPTS
Examination and Documentation:
If visiting a physical museum:

 Visit the selected artifacts and carefully observe their details. Take notes on their
appearance, construction, materials, and any inscriptions or markings.
 Use your camera or smartphone to capture images of the artifacts. Be sure to photograph
any relevant labels or information displayed nearby.
If using an online collection:

 Search for and access the digital representations of your chosen artifacts, tools, or
manuscripts.
 Zoom in on images to examine details closely. Read any accompanying descriptions, if
available.
 Take screenshots or save digital copies of the artifacts and their descriptions.
Analysis: After examining the artifacts, reflect on the following Guide questions:

 Are there any inscriptions or symbols that provide clues about their use or significance?
 Consider the societal implications of these artifacts. How might they have influenced daily life,
culture, or scientific understanding in ancient times?

report.
