Lesson Idea 4 Template Carney
Lesson Idea 4 Template Carney
Content Standards SC1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the use of the
modern atomic
theory and periodic law to explain the characteristics of atoms and elements.
f. Use the periodic table as a model to predict the relative properties of elements
based on the
patterns of electrons in the outermost energy level of atoms (i.e. including atomic
radii,
ionization energy, and electronegativity).
Technology Standards 1.3.c Students curate information from digital resources using a variety of tools
and methods to create collections of artifacts that demonstrate meaningful
connections or conclusions.
Universal Design This activity is extensive as a means of engagement and expression. The
Rationale students will collaborate with each other to create an organizer presenting a
particular element.
Lesson Idea The students will get into pairs and access the website Popplet. Their task is to
explore and research one element on the periodic table. The Popplet website is
an interactive "web" of information where the students will branch off different
ideas off one particular idea aka their element. They can add anything to the
Popplet. This can include the history behind the element, photos, the atomic
number, mass, valence electrons, etc. The purpose of the tasks is for the
students to not only get used to using the periodic table to find their information
(in which they will have an interactive one for this assignment), but to better their
research process. The teacher will not give them questions to search, but just let
the students use their creativity and problem solving skills to ask their own
questions about their chosen element. I will conclude the lesson by allowing the
students to present their Popplet and give a summary on why using the periodic
table is useful in a variety of settings.
Design Reflection The activity impacts the students because it allows them to become comfortable
with using the periodic table as well as creating better skills in independent
research. They will also learn about an element of their choice which can spark
later research as every element is related to daily activities some way or
another. To further extend this activity, I could use the Popplet app again but this
time describe an element using characteristics that can be found on the periodic
table and they have to use the table to discover what element is being described.
