• Set a rule that the poems must include different genres, fiction and
nonfiction.
• When I first tried this with my students, I gave them random topics,
but found that the more concrete students headed to that section of
the library, i.e. they went to find books about cars if their subject was
“an antique car.” To avoid this, I now set a rule that the book titles
should not be in the same subject area as the poem.
• Have students work in pairs. Or, assign two students the same topic,
but with different tones and then have them compare.
• Have students use book titles as the beginning and ending to the poem,
but have them write the lines in-between. There is a separate template
included for this type of poem.
• Have students read the back cover of the books they choose. Maybe
they’ll find a new book to love in the process!
