LTE Overview
Framing

LTE layer 1 is bandwidth agnostic based on Resource Blocks (RB), allowing various spectrum
allocations.

Current LTE specification supports only a subset of 8 different system bandwidths:

Channel Bandwidth (MHz) 1.4 3 5 10 15 20

Transmission Bandwidth (RB) 6 15 25 50 75 100
Transmission Bandwidth (Sc) 72 180 300 600 900 1,200
Transmission Bandwidth (MHz) 1.08 2.7 4.5 9 13.5 18

 Frame Structure:
– Type 1 (FDD): supports full duplex and half duplex operation with a frame duration of 10ms consisting of 20
slots at 0.5ms. Two adjacent slots form one sub-frame.
– Type 2 (TDD): consists of two half-frames with a duration of 5ms each and containing each 8 slots of length
0.5ms and three special fields (DwPTS, GP and UpPTS) which have configurable individual lengths and a total
length of 1ms.

RB spans either 12 sub-carriers with a sub-carrier bandwidth of 15kHz (Normal CP) or 24 sub-
carriers with a sub-carrier bandwidth of 7.5kHz each over a slot duration of 0.5ms (Extended CP).

Modulation

Digital bits are transferred onto an RF carrier through modulation. Modulation

can be based on three components: amplitude, phase, or frequency.

AMPLITUDE FREQUENCY PHASE AMPLITUDE AND PHASE

Modulated signals can be analyzed by polar diagrams (magnitude and phase)

represented by its rectangular components: I (In-phase) and Q (Quadrature).
