Secondly I would like to thank Eng. Samuel Nyamoko for giving me a chance and train me on
.the field work
ABSTRACT

Field attachment paper basically prepared by second year student at the end of the second

semester for every academic year 2022/2023 the field exercise for all second year

students commenced on IST May 2023 and ends on31st August 2023 where a student is required to

fill daily log book and prepare a weekly report according to the field timetable as for the matter of

fact this report aimed at informing the institute what the student has performed in his or her
respectively place.

Since the main goal of the industrial attachment exercise to all students is to cover the student

capacity, knowledge and competence by inking theories learnt in lectures with what the real world

is doing where opportunities and challenges can be executed by students themselves for-later uses
of

the institute in improving present and future training to students. This report provides verifiable

evidences of what really happened during my stay at the location, goal and specific objectives,

presentation of experiences from the field area, and lastly conclusion and recommendation.
CHAPTER ONE
1.0 Introduction
Industrial Attachment was introduced to inspire the students with practical and technical skills, as a

partial fulfilment for the award of a Certificate, Diploma or a Degree and to introduce the students

into working life. The training time allows the students to link the theoretical principles learnt in the

higher learning institutions and the real life professional and technical application. It gives the

students the practical skills and the work environment philosophy, to use their skills and principles

learned in class to serve the institutions and the society in general. Due to the above reasons,

Technical University of Mombasa has organised 12 weeks of training in any institution of students

choice to give every student an opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge achieved during the

course of study and to acquire new skills in managing relationship and carrying out the jobs

assigned.

1.2 Objective of Attachment

The industrial attachment program fulfils part of the requirement for the award of a

diploma in architecture and built environment at Technical university of Mombasa.

This report therefore provides a summary of the activities and duties carried out, as well as
experience gained during my attachment period.

1.3 BENEFIT TO STUDENT

In understanding work ethics & related issues.

Work ethics is the first principle to be considered at any site or organisation to get valuable end of

any work. These principles of personal ethics are values which are expected to be possessed by all

individuals in their working environment, and contribute a lot for a smooth interaction

among individuals. Work ethics reflected from faithful, punctual and who works effectively to gain

the expected result of the work. From the internship, some of the work ethics include;

Respecting the work.

Respecting the rules and regulation of the company.

Keeping the wealth of the government as your own wealth.

presenting the reports on the time.

Using time properly and being on time or on work time servicing customers.

How to use the property of the government properly and where it will be used.

Evaluating the general work situation.

Generally, we gained from attachment interims of understanding about work ethics like avoiding

unwanted behaviour like corruption, miss use time, left from work place and do not give respect for

work. Develop good work characters for the customers or stock holders respecting the right of

employers and keeping the rules of the work place or offices.

Entrepreneurship skills

Building construction work requires the serious execution to develop a design. Sometimes

unsuitable condition can be occurring, so entrepreneurs have the ability to get the solution.

A wide range of competence is seen as entrepreneurial and useful to entrepreneurs, these include

knowledge, skill and personal traits.

Managing skills; the ability to manage time and people successfully.

Communication skills; the ability to sell ideas and persuade others.

The ability to work both as part of a team and independently.

Able to plan, Coordinate and organise effectively.

CHAPTER TWO
2.1 ATTACHMENT EXPERIENCE

The section that I have been working In this section of the report we have tried to show all
activities

that we have experienced during our internship period in the hosting company, Nyamwaro
construction.

And all the activities which we have experienced during our internship regarding to the process are

presented below and we have tried to summarise all the training we got.

Section of the Company we have been working In Nyamwaro construction P.L.C we have been

working in different sections of the company both in the site work& office work.

Work task I have been executing & Procedures I followed

Site work
Formwork

2.2 FORM WORK

Formwork is a rectangular or other polygonal mould of steel or timber that used to give the required

shape for fresh concrete. Formwork is generally used for moulding and supporting the fresh

concrete.it is used in a structure on slab, beam, and column and on the stair case.
PERIOD OF REMOVAL:

Vertical formwork to columns, walls & beams 16 hours.

Soffit formwork to slab 21 days.

Props to slabs 14 days.

2.3 SLAB

Provide flat useful surface.

Slab can be classified depending up on Supported structural element.

 Beam supported slab.
 Flat slab.

FLAT SLAB FLOORING

The slab is of uniform thickness throughout without down stand beams and with the reinforcement

more closely spaced.

The reinforced slab is monolithically cast with the supporting columns without any provision of

beams.

The flat slab transfers the load directly to the supporting columns suitably spaced below the slab.

Used in case of large span and heavy loads.

Advantages of Flat Slab

1 Flexibility in room layout.

 Partition walls can be placed anywhere.
 Offers a variety of room layout to the owner.
 False ceilings can be omitted.

2 Reinforcement placement is easier. As reinforcement detailing of flat slab is simple, it is easier to

place.

3 Ease of Framework installation. Big table framework can be used in flat slab.

4 Building height can be reduced. As no beam is used, floor height can be reduced and consequently

the building height will be reduced.

 Approximately 10% of the vertical member could be saved.
 Foundation load will also reduce.

2.4 CURING CONCRETE

Concrete gains strength by hydration, and hydration can continue only if sufficient moisture is

present. To develop maximum strength, concrete must be cured. Curing is the process of controlling

the rate of moisture loss from concrete to ensure an uninterrupted hydration of Portland cement

after concrete has been placed and finished in its final position. Curing also helps maintain an

adequate temperature of concrete in its early stages, as this directly affects the rate of hydration of
cement and eventually the strength gains of concrete or mortars.

2.5 Reinforcement bars.

Reinforcement bar also called reinforcement steel and reinforcing steel, is a steel bar or mesh of

steel wires used in reinforced concrete and masonry structures to strengthen and hold the concrete

in tension .and to increase the tensile strength of a concrete rebar is used.

Types of steel reinforcement: there are about 4 main types steel reinforcement used in concrete

structures
1 .hot rolled deformed bars
2 .mild steel plain bars
3 .cold worked steel reinforcement
4 .pre stressing steel.

2.6 Column

Column –are vertical structure element where the load is transferred parallel to the longitudinal axis

as compression and sometimes tension .they are used to support floor /roof beams and the column

off the floor above . the column at the bottom floor of a tall buildings must carry the accumulative

weight of all the floors above. This is why the location of column ideally should be consistent

throughout all floor.

2.7 Office work

Next to site work we try to studying office works such as: -

Take off sheet.

How to read drawing.

Architectural drawing.

Structural drawing.

Drawing

2.7.1. ARCHITECTURAL DRAWING

Consists the following:

*floor plan
*site plan
*section
*elevation
*construction detail plan

2.7.2. STRUCTURAL DRAWING

Consists the following:

*columns
*floor slab
*staircase

CHAPTER THREE
OVERALL BENEFITS OFF ATTACHMENT PROGRAM

3.1 Upgrading theoretical skill

The program, internship, was a good time for us to develop a firm knowledge on

some courses that we have taken in the last four years in Construction Technology and

Management.

3.2 Improving practical skill

Some of the practical skill we have got are:

Knowing procedures and techniques of each work and in improving my work accuracy.

Ability to implement structural and architectural drawings on the ground.

We were able to know building construction procedures.

About construction materials and their use.

Management of construction materials in efficient use, wastage reduction & re –use again

Construction equipment and their use

Quantifying construction materials.

3.3 Industrial problem-solving capability

Some of my problem-solving capability are as follows: -

Smooth communication with staff members, guards and also daily labours

Get clear on the issues that created the problem. What really needs correcting here?

Get clear on everyone’s interests. This will help prioritise the resolution.

List all possible solutions. Get creative and brainstorm every conceivable outcome.

Evaluate the possible solutions. Sometimes a simple mark out of ten helps.

Select the best option.

Write down the best solution with all the details and implications.

Make contingency plans. Any change will probably produce a knock-on effect elsewhere.

Be sure to have it considered, if not covered!

3.4 Team playing skills

Construction work can be achieved with a positive attitude within a team/ group for the success of a

project.

When called upon to lead, an engineer must have good managerial and organisational skills.

Confident and enthusiastic engineers are able to succeed by gaining the trust of co-workers.

Thus, a good team player possesses the following skill: -

Distributing the work loads.

Reinforcing individual capabilities.

Shows commitment to the team to improve the problems or challenges.

Communicates constructively.

Functions as an active participant.

Treats others in a respectful and supportive manner.

Good team playing skill is essential for:

Effective completion of work piece.

Updated theoretical and practical knowledge.

Increasing productivity.

Incite creativity.

3.5 Leadership skills

The internship helps, us to develop our leadership skill and responsibility to guide or to implement

the aims of the organisation by the rule of the organisation with rules and regulation of the country.

Leadership is a skill used to guide, control, and monitors the people.

Leadership decision is very important in every work activity.

We have seen how each worker are controlled and organised to perform their day to day

activities.

We have actually observed the method of controlling the working time and amount of work

done by each worker so that the work proceeds according to the work plan.

For effective leadership we understood that personal values like confidence, effective

communication and devotion are very important.

The good leadership has the following items: -

Developing powerful missions and visions.

Forms strong team.

Ability to motivate the team member.

Having strong management of the employers.

Having the ability to solve problems and give directions.

Have a value to employers.

3.6 In understanding work ethics & related issues

Work ethics is the first principle to be considered at any site or organisation to get valuable end of

Respecting the work.

Respecting the rules and regulation of the company.

Keeping the wealth of the government as your own wealth.

presenting the reports on the time.

Using time properly and being on time or on work time.

Servicing customers.

Combating corruption.

How to use the property of the government properly and where it will be used .

Evaluating the general work situation.

Generally, we gained from internship interims of understanding about work ethics like avoiding

unwanted behaviour like corruption, miss use time, left from work place and do not give respect for

Communication skills; the ability to sell ideas and persuade others.

The ability to work both as part of a team and independently.

Able to plan, Coordinate and organise effectively.

CHAPTER FOUR
5.1 CHALLENGES

I had difficulties from moving from my place to site due to lack of enough transport.

I was not given a chance to give my ideas on designing process.

Workers were difficult to handle in the site.

I was not payed during attachment period.

5.2 CONCLUSION

Now a day the construction industry has been growing fast that involves and appreciates

government and private sectors to contribute their parts in countries development. But in order to

full fill this sector it requires well educated men force in the sector.

The attachment programs’ have vital role to use time effectively with in practical period. The field

practice has several roles in up grading practical knowledge of understanding and performing civil
works.

Generally during the internship program, we gained lots of Knowledge and skills in terms of
upgrading: -
 Practical skill
 Management skill
 Entrepreneurship Skill
 Team playing skill and
 Interpersonal communication skill

5.3 RECOMANDATION

As we stayed the internship program, we have tried to recommend the following main points
for the

company:

On the mix concrete the ratio of cement, sand, aggregate and addition of water are high

sometimes doesn’t properly done based on the needs design provided. Accordingly, the

consultant and site engineer should test the strength of the mix before cast.

The company doesn’t pay the salary to the workers at the planned time and creates conflict

between the company manager and the workers.

We also observed that some workers provided with less spacer on the casting reinforcement bar.

This affects the exact dimensions of the clear cover and the consultant should check every

reinforcement bar before casting concrete mix.

Most of site worker, particularly site engineers and daily labourers including me do not have

safety closes like safety shoes, helpmates, etc. to protect them from sudden injuries. Due to this

problem, they are exposed to different injuries while working. Therefore, we recommend the

company to arrange safety tools for site workers.

The company reuses some materials such as wood and Niles which have economic importance

to the company. However, reuses of such staff have difficulty for workers and delays the works.
