Want To
Want to = wanna
I want to visit Norway. > I wanna visit Norway.

She wants to visit Norway. [cannot use “wanna”]

They wanna come over today.

Have to = hafta
I have to study English every day.> I hafta study English every day.

You hafta take the test.

She hasta call her mom.

Have Got To
Have got to = gotta
I have got to buy some groceries. > I gotta buy some groceries.

*The full phrase “have got to” is very strong and rarely used for daily life situations.

He’s gotta wake up early.

You gotta chew with your mouth closed.

I don’t need to buy some groceries.

You don’t need to chew with your mouth closed.
He doesn’t need to wake up early.

Trying To
Trying to = tryna
I’m trying to improve my pronunciation. > I’m tryna improve my pronunciation.

Reducing Sounds
Use contractions

I’d like to go. > I would

He’s busy. > He is
What’re you doing? > What are

Cutting Off Sounds

Cut off “T”

I go out every night. > I go ou’ every nigh’.

Cut off “D”

I found a blue and white card. > I foun’ a blue an’ white car’.

Cut off Pronouns

he/his/her/them

I think he’s right. > I think ‘e’s right.

It’s his turn. > It’s ‘is turn.

It’s her turn. > It’s ’er turn.

I listen to them. > I listen to ‘em.

Connecting Sounds
Change T to D

The sweater is better. > swead-er/ bed-er

I like water. > wad-er

Put it in the desk. > Pud id in the desk.
