DECK

CAPTAIN - is a licensed mariner who has overall command and control of the
navigation, manoeuvring, cargo handling, stowage, communications and safe
handling of the ship. He/She ensures that the ship complies with the local and
international laws, as well as the port state and flag state policies.

CHIEF MATE - deck department management, navigation watch-standing, cargo


operations, safety and firefighting operations, environmental protection, as well as
acting as a vessel security officer and medical officer.

SECOND MATE - is responsible for maintaining the bridge navigational and


communications equipment as well as assisting with the vessel's piloting, navigation,
safety and small boat operations.

THIRD MATE - is to stand bridge watches and pilot the vessel to and from harbors or
job sites using all navigational means. A third mate is in charge of a bridge team, if
applicable and reports directly to the Captain or Master on bridge and conning (ship
handling) duties.

DECK CADET - maintaining ship areas, making sure that lifesaving equipment is
available and functioning, performing necessary repairs, assisting with the driving of
the ship, mooring and anchoring, and handling various port operations.

BOATSWAIN - was responsible for the masts, yards, sails, rigging, anchors, boats,
and cordage. The distinctive boatswain's pipe or whistle was used to issue signals to
the crew, and the boatswain typically was assisted by boatswain's mates.

ORDINARY SEAMAN - is an unlicensed entry level member of the Deck Department


crew. Performs work pertaining to general maintenance, repair, sanitation, and
upkeep of material, equipment, and areas that are the responsibility of the Deck
Department.
ENGINE

CHIEF ENGINEER - ensure that all the ship's machinery and equipment are working
in an efficient manner in order to support safe navigation of the ship.

SECOND ENGINEER - to schedule and direct maintenance inside the engine room. As
the chief may not be able to be in the engine room every day, due to paperwork or
meetings, it is the second engineer's responsibility to report on the plant conditions
and needs.

THIRD ENGINEER - is usually in charge of boilers, fuel, auxiliary engines,


condensate and feed systems, and is the third most senior engine officer on board.

FOURTH ENGINEER - Record keeping of machinery running hours under his charge.
For carrying out planned maintenance routine under the supervision of chief or
second engineer. Taking daily tank sounding of fuel oil, diesel oil, lube and cylinder
oil on board ship and record keeping of the same. Record keeping of sludge and
bilge on board.

FITTER - are found in industrial units and are responsible for assembling structural
forms. Typical resume samples for Fitters emphasize duties like positioning and
securing parts, using equipment to cut work piece, melting materials, removing
rough parts, igniting torches, and maintaining machinery.

OILER - will also be tasked to work on heavy machinery onboard in other parts of
the ship. This could include checking the lubrication of sewage and air conditioning
systems, and water pumps and therefore means working with machinery such as
shafts, compressors, gears, blowers, bearings and motors.

ELECTRICAL TECHNICAL OFFICER - monitor the operation of electrical, electronic


and control systems.

WIPER - is a position responsible for both cleaning the engine spaces and machinery
of a ship and assisting the ship's engineers as directed

STEWARD

CHIEF COOK - is board responsible for coordinating the preparation and cooking of
all meals on the vessel, and he or she may also be responsible for other duties such
as cleaning, purchasing ingredients, designing a menu, and so on.

MESSMAN - He may perform any of the following duties: setting tables, serving food
or waiting on tables. Part of his job is also to clean the dishes and equipment,
prepare coffee and beverages, make beds and clean quarters of officers. He is used
wherever the chief steward wants him.
