Documentation and inventory making

Heritage information plays an essential role in the adequate preparation,


implementation and monitoring of conservation strategies. Good decisions in
conservation are based on timely, relevant and sufficient information. For this reason,
the role of this introductory lecture is to underline the relevance of documentation as
initial understanding about the significance of heritage places.

The contents of this lecture deal with the importance of documentation as a tool to
identify the gaps in existing documentation of the site and the role of recording for
acquiring additional information to have a complete baseline information of a heritage
place.

For this reason, the course is aimed at providing an approach for effective use of
recording for heritage conservation, monitoring, interpretation, and presentation.

The teaching strategy involves:

- A global understanding of the role of information in conservation, addressing


national and international standards;
- Review potentials and limitations of recording and documentation techniques,
including simple and more advanced tools, emphasizing in financial
constraints of this practice;
- Short introduction to the use of simple and cost-effective recording and
documentation techniques to capture information from cultural heritage
resources;
- The use of information system in cultural heritage resources management;
- Report making for presenting information to stakeholders and decision
makers;

TOPICS
 Building a documentation strategy based on organizational, site and
techniques opportunities and constraints;
 An overall understanding of recording tools, making emphasis on effective
cost-effective tools:
o Digital photography for heritage information, including architectural,
record, and condition photos
o GPS for base-line site information, producing plans, elevations,
sections, and elevations
o Scaled-rectified photography using a levelled camera, control points
and CAD;
o Simple panoramic photography.

o Using scaled-rectified photography and CAD overlay;


o Observation, assessment and notation of conditions on wall elevations
 Report preparation and presentation

Additional understanding of more advanced recording techniques:

o REDM Total Station;


o Scaled-rectified photography and photogrammetric software;
o Terrestrial Laser scanning;
o High-resolution panoramic photography.

BIO-SKETCH MARIO SANTANA-QUINTERO

He completed studies of architecture in 1994 at the Universidad


Central de Venezuela. In 2003 he obtained a PhD with a
dissertation entitled ‘The use of three-dimensional
documentation and dissemination techniques in studying built
heritage’ at the R. Lemaire International Centre for Conservation
(University of Leuven). Besides his research experience, he
assistant professor at the R. Lemaire Centre for Conservation,
University of Leuven, Professor at the University of Applied
Sciences St Lieven and associate faculty at the University of
Pennsylvania. He is currently the Vice President of the ICOMOS
Scientific Committee on Heritage Documentation (CIPA) and
executive officer of the Virtual Systems and Multimedia Society
Furthermore, he has been working since 1997 as Cultural
Heritage documentation consultant for the United Nations
Educational, Scientific, and Culture Organization (UNESCO),
UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre, World Monuments Fund,
Getty Conservation Institute, United Nations Development
programme (UNDP), University of Leuven, The International
Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of
Cultural Property (ICCROM), University of Pennsylvania, Abu
Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage, Petra National Trust,
University of Applied Sciences of St Lieven, and the University
of Aachen RWTH. The projects have been carried out in
Afghanistan, Belgium, China, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Germany,
Jordan, India, Iraq, Italy, Kazakhstan, Sudan, the Sultanate of
Oman, Syria, United Arab Emirates, USA and Yemen.
