QUIZ #3

1. Determine the CN for a development on soils consisting of 30% group A and

70% group D. The proposed land use is

38 % Residential which is 38 % impervious

12 % Residential which is 25 % impervious
15 % Paved Roads with curbs and storm sewers
18 % Open Land with 60 % fair cover and 40 % good cover
17 % Parking Lots, plazas, schools, etc.

2. A trench 100 ft long is excavated 300 ft away and is parallel to a riverbank. A
sand aquifer is 20 ft thick and like that shown in Fig. 3-6 The river water surface
is 30 ft above the horizontal bottom of the aquifer. If the water depth in the
trench must be maintained at 6ft, at what rate must water be pumped from the
trench? How far from the trench will the aquifer cease to be saturated?

n = 0.25
n = Sr + Sy
unsaturated @ Sy = 0, Sr = n = 0.25
Vr = (0.25)(91.44m)(185.8061m2)
Vr = 4247.5274
Sr = Vr/Vt
0.25 = 4247.5274 / (6.096 *30.48*x)
Solving for x
X = 91.44 m from the trench

3. An aquifer slopes away from a river, as shown in Fig. 3-7 The hydraulic
conductivity of the aquifer which is 20 ft thick is known to be 0.2 ft/day. The
water is 20 ft deep in the river, and the bottom of the trench is 30 ft below the
bottom of the river and 600 ft away from the edge of the river. The trench is 40 ft
deep. Will water flow out of the trench without pumping? If so, what will be the
rate of flow?

Total hydraulic at A = Total hydraulic head at B

∆ z +h1=0+ PB

40+30=PB

PB =70 ft

Therefore, the water in trench would be 70ft but depth of trench available is only 40ft
deep.
