Greetings, everyone, and to our professor, Mr. John Paul Manalaysay. I’m Vi Rochelle Yusi, a
student from Bataan Peninsula State University in the program Bachelor of Science in
Electronics and Communication Engineering.
In this video, I would like to discuss the contributions, impacts, and effects of the first voyage
around the world to the Philippine history, as well as critique the chronicles of Antonio Pigafetta
as a primary source.
The first voyage around the world was written by an Italian Scholar and adventurer by the name
of Antonio Pigafetta. He accompanied Ferdinand Magellan's expedition to the Spice Islands
under the support of King Charles I of Spain, as well as his subsequent trip around the globe
after Magellan's passing in the Philippine Islands.
The first voyage around the world became a major source of information on Philippine history,
that is known today. The said journal made a great contribution to history as it tackled the
people, lifestyles, and languages of the Philippines. This includes the fact that the precolonial
Philippines is already a bit civilized, with a Rajah as the leader of each region. Moreover, it is
stated in the journal that Filipinos back in the day owned huge amounts of gold and lands that
were the basis of their socio-economic status, as well as the island’s rich natural resources.
The accidental discovery of the Philippines and its natural resources, which was written in
Pigafetta’s account, made the Spaniards come back to the island to colonize it, take hold of the
gold and other luxury items, and spread Christianity in the country or the triple Gs- God, Gold,
and Glory. This event made a significant impact on the Philippine history. Besides from the
damages and traumas our ancestors got from the Spaniards, we were able to be introduced to
new customs and religion, which is not entirely a bad thing. However, we suffered from
something called “psychocultural marginality” or the social and emotional disorder together with
the loss of one's cultural identity.
Now, let’s get started on criticizing Pigafetta’s chronicles as a primary source. First, the journal
was made by a venetian scholar for the Europeans, especially the Spaniards. With this in mind,
we can already expect some biases in the author’s work since the journal was primarily based on
his own observations and judgment.
Second, Antonio Pigafetta was known to be Magellan’s assistant and a faithful one at that. This
can be noticed on how there were nothing negative said to Magellan in the “First Voyage Around
the World” which I think is to maintain the “hero” image of Magellan to the Europeans.
Third, upon discovering the Philippine Island, the Europeans already have a clothing style that
covers the body which is very different to our ancestors who wear a piece of clothing called
“bahag.” It was also stated on the author’s account that people here rely on sticks with bones at
the end. These characteristics are seen as poor and indigenous by Pigafetta plus a certain
incident, Filipinos were also labeled as great thieves which is why the Philippines was named
Ladroni Islands or thief islands.
Last, is about the religions and belief. In the whole journal, the crew of ships being Christians is
pretty obvious. That is why when they learned that in the precolonial Philippines, they worship
different idols, nature like sun, moon, and stars, and the presence of the belief about the “12
Priests of the Devil” and the “Seven Little Goats” Pigafetta was shook and labeled those as
demonic and blasphemous.

Aside from these biases that was expected due to the difference in culture and belief and those
that were not mentioned, Pigafetta’s chronicles as a primary source is pretty credible and
informative. It is detailed and organized. He was also very descriptive when it comes to the
people’s lifestyle, physical appearances, as well as, the places’ appearance.
