London - EGLL
Heathrow Airport

New York - KJFK

John F. Kennedy Airport

This tutorial guides you through the navigation process on the route London - New York, flown by
Concorde years ago. fms files are included in the zip file in the MANUALS folder.
This is an ADDITION to the FULL manual and the ‘10 essential’ manual. The takeoff in London is a good
start, since the takeoff in NY with subsequent Canarsie climb requires even more experience with the jet.
Concorde’s INS was able to store 9 waypoints, therefore this route is split in two parts. Since version 2.0,
the waypoint coordinates can be directly inputted and stored in the 3D INS.
The maps are created with the software ‘Little Navmap’: https://albar965.github.io/littlenavmap.html

OVERVIEW - RADIO NAVIGATION
Concorde flew this transatlantic route without any GPS equipment for many years. The Inertial
Navigation Platforms provided precises position and route data even in the wideness over the
Atlantic ocean. But especially over land radio navigation was still important. The nearer we are to
an airport, the more we will work with the radio navigation equipment. It takes a bit of practice to
transition from radio nav to INS, work some time and parallel and then back from INS to radio nav.

OVERVIEW - INS NAVIGATION
The INS units are capable to show various information. Two practical modes for navigation are
DISTANCE/TIME to the next waypoint waypoint and XTK/TKE showing the deviation in degrees to
the next waypoint. The next waypoint can be changed via WY PT CHG.

INS ALIGNMENT
If PRO mode is ON ( SETTINGS in the Graphical User Interface) during ‘cold and dark’ startup, INS
must be aligned before it is ready to use. TIP: Switch PRO mode off for immediat align.

For manual align, switch the MSU’s into

ALIGN mode (Engineering panel).
Mode Selector Units
The duration of the alignment process MSU for INS1,2,3
depends on the position of the aircraft on the
earth's surface (~15min). The nearer the jet INS3 INS2
is to the Equator the quicker the alignment is
done.
If the INS unit is switched to ‘DSRTK/SYS’
on the right data display appear performance INS1
index vs the desired index. And on the left
display a countdown is shown.

The process is completed successfully, if the

READY NAV light shines green steadily.
Switch the unit to NAV mode then. The INS
is now ready for navigation.

OVERVIEW -GPS
GPS technology was available only in relatively recent years. Concorde was not equipped with
GPS systems by default. But many of us are used to it and they are very handy. There are two
GPS units hidden in the Cockpit.

See FULL manual for more details

OVERVIEW - NIGHT FLIGHTS
Be aware that the cockpit instruments look quite differently with night lighting on. Test this on the
ground and be familiar with the knobs, switches and quick access areas. See FULL manual.

ROUTE CREATION
Concorde FXP is able to work with X-Plane ‘fms’ flightplans like the two provided for this tutorial. You
can create flightplans with an external software. So for this specific flightplan ‘LittleNavMap’ was used.
As with the real machine you can create a route using the 3D INS device, inputting the coordinates of
the single waypoints. (See next pages).
Load the route via GUI → Flight Preparation → LOAD ROUTE

Route Loading

External software

This image comes from ‘LittleNavMap’ but

there is a variety of good route creation
tools. You are free to use the one you like.

INS - FLIGHT PLAN CREATION
Since Concorde FXP v2.0 it is possible to create a flightplan also by inserting the waypoints
directly into the 3D INS in the 3D cockpit! As with the real INS, it is possible to store up to 9
waypoints.
The main mode switch must be set to ‘WAY PT’ (waypoint). The waypoint number is selected
on the waypoint number scroll wheel. The keypad is used to insert LAT/LONG after the
hemisphere North/South is chosen. Input is completed with the ‘INSERT’ button.
The inserted flightplan will also be displayed on the G1000.

3. Insert the Latitude coordinate using the

4. Select East or West for the Longitude by
using the keys ‘4’ or ‘6’
5. Input the Longitude coordinate via the

TODAY’S ROUTE
For this tutorial you can use the ‘fms’ files ‘FXP_EGLL_KJFK_PART1.fms’ and PART2.
It will lead us from London Heathrow all over the Atlantic ocean to New York John F. Kennedy airport.
It consists of 18 waypoints. 9 for the first part and 9 for the second part. 9 was the maximum number of
waypoints that could be stored into Concorde’s navigation system.

WAYPOINT CHECK

mode. Make sure that the next waypoint is selected. Target waypoint 1 or 2.
This is NOT the waypoint on the scroll wheel. It is the waypoint on the FROM-TO display. When you
start from EGLL this should show 01 or -- (first waypoint 0 to 1 shows --). You can also set 12 using
waypoint 2 as target since we will steer to wpt 1 (Woodly NDB) via radio navigation.
Waypoints are set by activating the button ‘WY PT CHG’, insert from-to waypoint numbers and hit
INSERT. Click ‘WY PT CHG’ again to stop the input process.
The G1000 can be used as quick check. Waypoints changed on the INS are updated there too.
