Dell EMC PowerProtect DD 6400 3

Executive summary

Executive summary

Overview Dell EMC PowerProtect DD6400 is a cost-effective appliance for entry and mid-market
customers. This appliance is built on industry leading hardware: Dell EMC PowerEdge
14G 740xd. The active tier capacity of this model varies from 8 TB to 172 TB; the cloud
tier varies from 64 TB to 344 TB. This model also has an industry leading 1 hardware
compression card that delivers higher compression at higher performance. This results in
an increase in logical capacity stored of up to 30% 2. DD6400 comes with all-inclusive
license bundled with Cloud Tier, Boost, and Replication.

DD6400 has a simplified workflow for system configuration, file system creation, and file
system expansion. It has linear scaling of storage capacity, in increments of 4 TB.

DD6400 includes a new RAID concept called extend-based RAID, which helps to
eliminate the need for separate spare drives, dedicated CT storage, and disks for
overprovisioning.

Hardware

Hardware

Overview The Dell EMC DD6400 appliance comes with set of 8 8TB hard drives in its base model.
This provides up to 32 TB of storage for active tier and cloud tier.

A main advantage of DD6400 is that there is no need to add a separate storage shelf to
configure the cloud tier. Capacity is licensed up to a maximum of 32 TB for active tier and
64 TB for cloud tier in the base configuration. It also has a pair of SSDs for DDOS and two
additional SSDs for system cache. The first cache disk is available in the base model. The
second cache disk is added when the customer adds the first expansion shelf.

For networking, there are four slots for Ethernet and one slot for Fiber channel. A network
daughter card is required, either a four port 10Gb BASET or a four port 10Gb SFP+ card.

DD6400 has up to three optional Ethernet slots for any combination of four port 10GbE
BASET, four port 10GbE SFP+, or two port 10/25 Gb card. Fiber channel is also an
option, and can use two port 16GB FC.

DD6400 has a single SAS card, with dual path for an expansion shelf.

Feature comparison

Feature comparison

Table of features The following table compares the key features of the PowerProtect DD6400 with those of
other PowerProtect DD models.

Expansion Details

Capacity and A DD6400 base model starts with 2U and a minimum capacity of 8 TB. You can increase
licensing capacity in increments of 4 TB with license. For active tier, the maximum capacity is 32
TB; for cloud tier, the maximum capacity is 64 TB.

Adding a first ES40 expansion shelf provides additional capacity of from 40 TB to 104 TB.
The maximum cloud tier license supports 208 TB. When expanding capacity, a second
SSD cache disk must be configured in order to avoid any errors.

Adding a second ES40 expansion shelf provides additional capacity of from 112 TB to
172 TB. The maximum cloud tier license supports 344 TB.

Migration

Migration

Requirements Migrating data from the existing entry-level and mid-level models to DD6400 is achieved
by collection replication. Some requirements:

• Both source and target systems must be running the same release of DDOS. For
example, before initiating the migration, if the target system is running DDOS 7.7,
upgrade the source system to DDOS 7.7 as well.
• The target system must have same or higher capacity than the source system, and
should include both active tier and cloud tier.

Note: A controller upgrade is not supported in DD6400.
