Introduction
Service data is only intended to supplement the Workshop
Manual in Scania Multi. The work should always be carried out as
described in the Workshop Manual in Scania Multi.
Since service data is not updated as often as the Workshop
Manual in Scania Multi, there may be differences in the
information provided. On Scania TIL you can always find the
latest version of the service data since it is updated there more
often than in the printed booklet.
Service Data, Engine, has changed compared with previous
versions. Instead of classifying the tightening torques according
to cubic capacity, they are now classified and grouped by
component. We hope that this will make it easier to find
information, we will avoid duplicating data and ensure above all
that the correct tightening torque is provided.
The descriptions in the booklet are marked with symbols which
correspond to the tabs in the Workshop Manual in Scania Multi as
follows:

Generator set
Scania generator sets are available in a large number of variants:
• With or without canopy
• CE marked or not CE marked
• Multiple options for engine and generator, the choice depends
on the power needed
• Multiple options for instrument panels, the choice depends on
the generator set operation type
• With or without multiple options
The generator sets can supply output power of 250-600 kVA (50-
60 Hz).

The fibre seal to be renewed when the joint has come undone.
The fibre seal consists, for example, of cellulose fibre or polymer
fibre, a polymer matrix and filling material. Make sure that you
have sufficient clamping length on the screw in order to cope with
the compression that always occurs with a fibre seal.

NOTE:
If a graphite seal must be renewed, e.g. due to leakage
between a cylinder head and the exhaust manifold, the seals
between all cylinder heads and the exhaust manifold must
always be renewed.
Be careful not to confuse the different types of seals for the
same exhaust manifold. They have different heights after
tightening.

Lubricating points during assembly
IMPORTANT!
When assembling the engine, it is important for oil to be
applied to all contact surfaces with mechanical movement.
Apply engine oil to the lubricating points to reduce the risk of
engine damage when starting.
IMPORTANT!
Remember to remove the turning tool from the flywheel after
adjustment.
Check and adjust the valve clearance with the engine cold. The
clearance for intake valves must be 0.25 mm. The clearance for
exhaust valves must be 0.65 mm in K, N and F series buses and
0.5 mm in P, G, R and S series trucks.
For K, N and F series buses, fit 2 187 582 Turning tool to the hub
on the crankshaft.
For P, G, R and S series trucks, fit 2 498 846 Turning tool for 7 litre
engines for flywheel (5299073CE) in the recess on the flywheel
housing immediately above the starter motor or immediately
below it if the vehicle is equipped with PTO.
Turn the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation until the
TDC mark on the torsion damper is in the 12 o’clock position.

NOTE:

stroke to intake stroke, i.e. when the exhaust valve is about to
close at the same time as the intake valve opens.
X = Exhaust valve
O = Intake valve
IMPORTANT!
Remember to remove the turning tool from the flywheel after
adjustment.
Check and adjust the valve clearance with the engine cold. The
intake valve clearance should be 0.45 mm and exhaust valve
clearance 0.7 mm. For gas engines, the clearance for exhaust
valves is 0.8 mm.
Max. clearance between 2 valves under the same valve bridge is
0.2 mm.
Engines equipped with flywheel with marking TDC Up: Fit turning
tool 99 109 in the holes of the upper hatch. Press the pinion into
the external ring gear and turn the flywheel with a ratchet handle
and a 14 mm socket. Read the mark on the flywheel in the upper
window of the flywheel housing. Depending on equipment fitted, it
may not be possible to use turning tool 99 109 on certain buses.
NOTE:
Valve transition occurs when the cylinder switches from
exhaust stroke to intake stroke. The exhaust valve is closing
while the intake valve is opening.

Tightening torque
Tightening torque, explanation
Why tightening torque?
When a screw joint is tightened,
the screw is stretched. The
more the screw is stretched, the
greater force it applies to clamp
the joint together. In this
manner, the screw joint obtains
a preload. This applies to a
specific limit, which is not
known when tightening a screw
without tightening torque. If this
limit is exceeded, the screw will
be overstretched. At this time,
the screw often breaks and the
preload may be partially
released.
To obtain maximum clamping
force, torque or angle tightening
is therefore used.
The preload built up in the
screw joint results in a clamping
force. This generates friction
between the surfaces that hold 1. Tightening to torque
the components together.
2. Preload in screw joint
3. Friction
IMPORTANT!
• Grasp the torque wrench handle and tighten at an even rate.
• Never use the torque wrench as a hammer.
• The torque wrench lever must not be extended unless the
torque wrench has been set appropriately.
Retightening
Retightening is carried out when the joint has been in use for a
certain period of time. Certain joints must always be retightened.
Other joints are not to be retightened under any circumstances.
Always follow the instructions in the Workshop Manual to
determine whether a screw joint requires retightening.
Reusing screws
A screw is stretched during each angle tightening and therefore
cannot be reused in some joints or can only be reused a certain
number of times. Follow the instructions in the Workshop Manual.
IMPORTANT!
Always check first to see if there is a specific tightening torque
stated in the work descriptions in the Workshop Manual.
Specific tightening torques always take precedence over
normal and special tightening torques.
IMPORTANT!
Do not use unmarked screws and nuts as they are not always
of the correct strength class. Use only genuine Scania parts.
Hexagon screws
The marking on screws with a
hexagon head, hexagon socket
(internal hexagon) and six-point
socket (torx) comprises two
digits, sometimes separated by
a dot.
The first digit (1) is one
hundredth of the ultimate
strength. Example: 10
indicates an ultimate strength of
1,000 MPa.
The first digit (1) multiplied by
the second digit (2) is one-tenth
of the yield limit. Example: 8.8
indicates a yield limit of
640 MPa while 10.9 indicates
900 MPa.
Nuts
The marking on nuts comprises one digit. The digit indicates that
the nut is designed for a screw with the same first digit. The
marking can also appear as a clock-face with dots.
424 295
Left-hand thread
Left-threaded screws and nuts
are marked with an arrow or
with a notch on the corner of the
spanner flat.
Left-hand thread
IMPORTANT!
Always check first to see if there is a specific tightening torque
stated in the work descriptions in the Workshop Manual.
Specific tightening torques always take precedence over
normal and special tightening torques.
NOTE:
When a damaged thread is repaired with a thread insert, the
normal screw and prescribed tightening torque are to be
maintained. Fit the thread insert as instructed in the Workshop
Manual.

The stud end must be tightened in the threaded hole so that the
stud does not come loose when undoing the nut. To tighten the
stud in the threaded hole the torque must just overcome the
friction in the thread and generate a preload. The torque for
locking is 50% of the normal torque for hexagon screws, hexagon
socket screws, six-point socket screws, hexagon nuts.

Wear to the piston rings – Piston ring gap
This check is only carried out on used piston rings.
The piston rings are a consumable and should be renewed upon
fitting. Use this list as a guide to get an indication of abnormal
wear.
Wear to the piston rings is caused mainly by contamination in the
incoming air.
Abnormal wear to the piston rings may also mean that the piston
ring groove in the piston is affected axially. Normally, there should
not be any noticeably excessive axial play. If there is noticeable
excessive play in the piston ring groove with a new piston ring
fitted, the piston is used.
The illustration below shows the measurement of the piston ring
gap on a used piston ring fitted in a new cylinder liner.
If the cylinder liner is used, fit the piston ring under the cylinder wear
ridge in the lower half of the liner.
