"Cover Ilusteation by Martin Charteton The love of money is the root of all evil they say. But without significant sums of money, the Edinburgh Fringe simply could not exist. The hundreds of performing companies that make the epic trip to Edinburgh invest thousands of pounds to realise their dream of appearing at the world’s largest arts festival. Many different organisations support the Fringe with grants and sponsorship. We thank them for continuing to invest in the talent of the furure, Withour their support, the Fringe would be even more dependent on the performers to cover the costs of printing this programme, staffing the box office and dealing with hundreds of enquiries every day. The Edinburgh Fringe is unique. Ic is about entertainment as well as art and its continuing success lies in its ability to appeal to all ages and every kind of interest. 9,800 theatre, dance, comedy, musical and visual artists have made it to the 1998 Fringe. The enduring appeal of this chaotic assembly of artists is the fact that itis still possible for anyone to bring a show; the only barrier they have to cross is raising the necessary funds. We salute their enterprise and enthusiasm and wish them all success.
