LEARNING ENRICHMENT

St Joseph’s College has a comprehensive, non-selective enrolment for students from Year 7 to Year 12. St Joseph’s educational
approach is centred on a Marist ethos in which enrolment is available for students of varying academic ability. There is no entry
examination although families need to supply documentation about their son’s academic achievement and information about
whether any special support may be required to facilitate the student’s learning. Diagnostic testing may be conducted for new
enrolments to help determine essential academic skills ability. Parents are required to supply information and documentation
about any special need or learning difficulty relating to the student. All information supplied by parents about their son’s special
need is handled with discretion.

Staff

St Joseph’s has a Centre for Learning Enrichment and employs specialist teachers to support the boys and their individual
learning requirements. Additional staff are also available for International, ESL students and Indigenous students.

Students with Specific Learning Needs

It is an expectation that students at St Joseph’s College will be part of an inclusive schooling framework and will participate and
contribute to all aspects of College life. All students are engaged in regular academic courses as determined by the Board of
Studies. The services of the Centre for Learning Enrichment are provided to students who have been diagnosed with a disability
and/or with a critical need in literacy and/or numeracy. The College also caters for students who are especially academically
gifted by providing them with opportunities and programs for enrichment.

Learning Difficulties

It is important for parents to be aware that it may not be possible to provide the full and comprehensive support services for
individual students desired by parents. The staff of the Centre for Learning Enrichment will do their best to accommodate
students’ needs within a mainstreamed educational environment. However, it must be acknowledged that in some
circumstances a specialist or more intensive remedial learning environment may be more suitable for individual students. Within
the limits of resources and staffing, the College will endeavour to meet the learning needs of all its students.
The College understands that many students in the mid-range will develop with some additional assistance. Some additional
assistance can be negotiated with individual subject teachers of your son who may be able to provide extension work, additional
work or additional explanations. Some parents choose to supplement their son’s school work with private tutors external to the
College. This can be discussed with your son’s Academic Coordinator to alert them to this course of action.
