OBJECTIVE AND LEARNING OUTCOMES


Educational To introduce the students to the concepts of accounting and basic
objective financial statements.
Course Description This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental
accounting concepts and principles underlying the preparation and use
of financial statements, with an emphasis on how financial information
is used in resource allocation decisions by users internal and external
to the firm. The course also provides an awareness of ethical issues in
accounting. The course covers following topics: how to record, store,
summarize and analyze business transactions under accrual basis of
accounting; the content and the format of the four basic financial
statements; analysis of financial statements; determination of inventory
costs and cost of the goods sold in merchandising firms; plant assets
and their depreciation; receivables.
Learning outcomes
LO 1 Explain how accounting information is used in resource allocation
decisions by users internal and external to the firm.
LO 2 Describe the basic assumptions, concepts and principles of financial
accounting
LO 3 Show effects of business transactions on the financial statements.
LO 4 Distinguish cash flows (cash basis) from income measurement (accrual
basis).
LO 5 Prepare a set of simple financial statements with their components
LO 6 Broadly assess the financial position, profitability and cash flows of a
firm through simple analysis.

DETERMINING LETTER GRADE


A combination of bell curve and catalogue methods is used to determine the letter grades, the
intervals of catalogue scores are defined based on the distribution of students. The passing
grade will be determined after the final exam.
• To be eligible for taking final and composite exams 70% attendance requirement
should be met. Students who are unable to meet 70% attendance requirement receive an
automatic F grade and are not allowed to take final and composite exams.
