Powder Bed Fusion

Is an additive manufacturing process uses either a laser or electron beam to melt and fuse
material powder together to develop products.

Consist of:

 Heat source laser or electron beam

 Powder roller or scraper
 Powder bed
 Build platform

• Laser beam Powder Bed Fusion :

 a laser is used to heat material in a powder form into 3D products.

 After a layer of powder has been indexed down, a new layer of powder is spread to
continue the process.
 laser powder bed fusion does not require support.

• Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion:

 is used to melt particles together in specific areas.

 The beam can be manipulated very fast, which speeds the overall process by allowing
multiple melt pools to occur simultaneously.

Technologies:

Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)

Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS)

Selective Laser Melting (SLM)

Electron Beam Melting (EBM)

Materials:

Polymer-, Metal- or Ceramic powder

While LBM transfers heat into a powder, EBM heats the powder bed with kinetic energy from
the accelerated electrons. The collation between the powder bed and the electrons can result in
a cloud of powder. This is the reason the powder used for EBM is larger than the one used for
LBM powder clouds during manufacturing
