QUESTION TAG

It is a small question used at the end of a statement Rule:


Rules:  Main verbs (split )
1. If a statement is Positive, tag is Negative. 1. V1 = do+V1
Eg: She is a doctor, isn’t she? 2. V2 = did+V1
2. If a statement is Negative, tag is Positive. 3. V1+s/es/ies = does+V1
Eg: She is not a doctor, is she? Eg :
Negative words 1. He loves football, ………?
 No, not, never, nothing, nil, neither, not only, no 2. Children like toys, ………?
sooner, no other, nobody, no one, none, hardly, 3. Arun ate an apple, ……….?
scarcely, rarely, barely, little, few, seldom. Rule:
Am + not = aren’t Used to
Will + not = won’t  Used to+not = didn’t
Shall + not = shan’t Eg :
Ought to + not = oughtn’t / hadn’t 1. She used to write beautiful poems, ……..?
Used to + not = didn’t 2. They are used to playing football in the ground,..........?

 Take the auxiliary verb from ‘Main clause’.

 Use the pronoun ‘It’ in question tag.

Rule: Begins with ‘one’
 These, Those, Few, A few, The few, Everyone,  If a statement begins with the pronoun ‘One’, take
Everybody, Someone, Somebody, Anyone, Anybody, the same pronoun ‘One’ in question tag.
No one, Nobody, Either of them, Neither of them,
None of them, Some of them, All of them Eg:
 Use the pronoun ‘They’ in question tag. 1. One should do one’s duty first, ………….?
(Begins with Either of them, Neither of them/Some 2. One must come here, ………?
of them/ None of them/All of them = they 3. One student is writing this exam, ………..?
(Begins with neither of us/Some of us/None of us/All Rule:
of us = we  If a statement begins with everyone, everybody,
(Begins with neither of you/Some of you/None of you/ someone, somebody, anyone, anybody, no one,
All of you = you nobody
Eg:  Use Plural auxiliary verb in question tag.

Rule:  If a statement begins with Do /Don’t/Have/Do have
 Question tag is ‘will you’
 Has, Have, Had ( Main verbs = to eat)
Eg:
1. Has = does

2. Have = do
2. Have a cup of coffee, ………..?
3.Had = did
3. Do have a cup of coffee, ………….?
Eg:
1. I had my breakfast at 8 O’ clock,……..? Rule:

3. They have their dinner at 7 O’ clock, ………..?  Tag is won’t you?
4. She takes her breakfast at 9 O’ clock,………….? Eg:
